What is Alinia?

Alinia (nitazoxanide) is an antiprotazoal agent used to treat diarrhea caused by infections by the protozoa Cryptosporidium parvum and Giardia lamblia. It works by halting the growth of these protozoa. Normally, if diarrhea has lasted 7 days or more, protozoa are suspected.

There are two forms of Alinia - tablets and oral solution. If you've been prescribed the tablets, it's normally 1 tablet by mouth with food every 12 hours.

Store Alinia tablets at room temperature in the container they came in, tightly closed and away from excess moisture or heat. Keep the oral solution at room temperature and tightly closed. Once opened, the solution must be used within 7 days; after that it should be discarded.

If you have diabetes and you're taking the oral solution, you will need to monitor your blood sugar levels more closely because the solution also contains a significant enough amount of sucrose. Always be sure that medical personnel can be informed you're taking this medication in emergency situations. If Alinia is prescribed for a child, be sure they get plenty of fluids, preferably in small, regular sips.
