Bentyl Information:

What is Bentyl?

Bentyl (dicyclomine hydrochloride) is an antispasmodic acetylcholine inhibitor prescribed to treat functional bowel syndromes, a type of gastrointestinal disorder (e.g., irritable bowel syndrome). It works by blocking the neurotransmitters responsible for parasympathetic nerve impulses and reduces spasms in the smooth muscles associated with bowel function. Bentyl medication is available as tablets, capsules, or an oral solution.

How do I take Bentyl?

Always follow the instructions on your prescription label, and do not take more of this medication than prescribed or take it for longer than prescribed. It is usually taken 4 times by mouth daily with a glass (8oz) of water. Do not crush, chew, break, or cut your pills. If you are taking a liquid version of Bentyl medicine, always use a dosing spoon or cup to measure to your medication.

Before taking Bentyl, tell your doctor if:

  • You are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed, as it is dangerous for your infant.
  • You regularly drink alcohol or are an alcoholic.
  • You regularly take antacids.
  • You are often dehydrated, or need to work in the heat often.
  • You have myasthenia gravis.
  • You have glaucoma.
  • You have an enlarged prostate or have problems with urination.
  • You are constipated or have any kind of bowel obstruction.
  • You have ulcerative colitis or toxic megacolon, especially if severe.
  • You have a hiatal hernia (a hernia of the stomach through part of the diaphram) or GERD.
  • You have or have a history of heart disease or disorder, especially if it has been severe, including a heart rhythm disorder, high blood pressure, and congestive heart failure.
  • You have had or need to have an ileostopy or colostomy.
  • You have or have a history of kidney or liver disease.
  • You have a nerve problem.

What are the possible side effects of taking Bentyl?

You should seek immediate emergency medical attention if you experience any of the following: unusual behavior or thought patterns, confusion, hallucinations, swelling in your face and lips, swelling in your tongue or throat, extreme thirst, feeling very hot with heavy sweating or hot and dry skin, hives, a fluttering feeling in your chest, pounding heartbeats, stomach pain, bloating, severe constipation, inability to urinate, or worsening symptoms of your functional bowel disorder.

Common Bentyl side effects only need medical attention if they persist or get worse. These include: drowsiness or dizziness, nervousness, blurred vision, stuffy nose, dry mouth, muscle weakness, or mild constipation.

What if I forget to take a dose of Bentyl?

Never take a double dose or any extra Bentyl medication to make up for missing a dose. If it's almost time for your next dose, simply skip the missed dose. Otherwise you can take the missed dose as soon as you remember it.

How do I store Bentyl?

Store Bentyl at room temperature and away from excess moisture or heat. Always keep your medication out of the reach of children or pets.

What happens if I overdose on Bentyl?

Symptoms of overdose include: seizure, muscle weakness, inability to move any part of your body, fainting, dilated pupils, trouble swallowing, nausea, or vomiting.

If you suspect a Bentyl overdose, call your local poison control center or seek emergency medical assistance.
