Benzaclin Information:
What is Benzaclin?
Benzaclin is a type of gel that is used to treat acne vulgaris. It contains both clindamycin and benzoyl peroxide (5%). Both of these medications have antibiotic properties that work by killing acne-causing bacteria.
How do I use Benzaclin?
Before applying Benzaclin, gently wash and dry the affected area. Benzaclin is usually applied twice daily, in the mornings and evenings. Apply a thin layer of medication to clean skin and allow it to soak in. Avoid applying the gel near your nostrils, mouth and eye area. Follow your doctor’s instructions regarding how often and how much medication you should apply. Individual requirements may vary. Try to avoid exposure to the sun while using this medication and talk to your doctor about what other skincare products or makeup you may use while using Benzaclin.
Before taking Benzaclin, tell your doctor if:
- You area allergic to any of the ingredients in Benzaclin.
- You are sensitive to antibiotics or benzoyl peroxide.
- You have an intestinal disorder such as colitis.
- You are pregnant or breastfeeding.
- You have psoriasis, eczema or another skin condition besides acne.
What are the possible side effects of taking Benzaclin?
Possible side effects from using Benzaclin include itching, dry skin, peeling skin, and a mild burning or stinging sensation when medication is applied to the affected area. If any of these side effects are severe or persistent, tell your doctor or dermatologist. If you experience severe diarrhea, also tell your doctor. This could be a side effect of the medication.
What if I forget to take a dose of Benzaclin?
If you forget to apply a dose of Benzaclin, apply the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it’s almost time for your next application, skip the missed one and continue on your regular regimen. Do not use two consecutive applications to make up for a missed one.
How do I store Benzaclin?
Benzaclin should be tightly stored in its container at a room temperature around 77 degrees Fahrenheit. This medication expires in three months. Ask your pharmacist how to properly dispose of this medication if it is not used in time.
What happens if I overdose on Benzaclin?
Overuse of Benzaclin can result in more severe side effects such as peeling and irritated skin. If you think you are using too much Benzaclin, talk to your doctor or dermatologist. If someone accidentally ingests Benzaclin, call the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222.
