Chantix Information:

What is Chantix?

Chantix is a nicotinic antagonist drug that is used to treat nicotine addiction and help tobacco smokers to quit. It has been proven to be more effective than nicotine replacement therapy like nicotine gum and the patch, and more effective than other medications like bupropion in treating nicotine addiction in the majority of people studied. Chantix works by both stimulating nicotine receptors as cigarettes do, but to a lesser degree, and by decreasing the pleasurable effects of nicotine by blocking its ability to stimulate dopamine receptors. This blocks the “reward response” to smoking a cigarette.

How do I take Chantix?

Use Chantix coupons or a savings card to get Chantix at a discounted price in your pharmacy. Before you start taking your medication, ask your doctor to provide you with any additional advice or instructions to help you quit smoking. Chantix comes as a tablet to be taken orally once or twice a day with a glass of water after a meal. You doctor should start you on a smaller dose that is taken once a day and then increase your dose the following week. Take your medication at the same time every day. Plan a date to quit smoking and start taking your medication 7 to 35 days before this date. Try not to smoke another cigarette after the day you quit. If you are successful at quitting after 12 weeks, your doctor may prolong your medication up to another 12 weeks to increase your chances of staying off cigarettes for good. If you are not able to quit after 12 weeks, talk to your health care professional about what happened and try another treatment, therapy, or strategy to quit.

Before taking Chantix, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to any of the ingredients in Chantix.
  • You have tried to quit smoking in the past and what challenges and withdrawal symptoms you faced.
  • You have diabetes.
  • You have a history of mental illness.
  • You drink alcohol regularly.
  • You have ever had a heart, blood, or kidney disease or disorder.
  • You are pregnant or breast feeding.
  • You are taking prescription or nonprescription drugs, vitamins, or supplements, especially blood thinners, other treatments for nicotine addiction, asthma medications like theophylline, and insulin.
  • You have suffered a stroke or heart attack.

What are the possible side effects of taking Chantix?

Possible side effects from taking Chantix include headache, constipation, gas or indigestion, vivid and abnormal or disturbing dreams, nausea, trouble sleeping, a change in appetite, and a strange taste in the mouth. Severe but rare side effects include allergic reaction, a negative change in mood, continuous insomnia, weakness, numbness, or pain in the extremities, back or neck pain, chest pain, vomiting, sweating, slow speech, hallucinations, and difficulty breathing or swallowing. Report any serious side effects to your doctor at once.

What if I forget to take a dose of Chantix?

If you forget to take a dose of Chantix, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it’s almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue on your regular schedule. Don’t take a double dose or consecutive doses of Chantix to make up for a missed one.

How do I store Chantix?

Store Chantix tightly closed in its packaging at a room temperature between 59 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit. Keep your medication out of reach of children and pets.

What happens if I overdose on Chantix?

Little has been reported on Chantix overdose. Signs of overdose greatly depend on the patient, the quantity ingested and if any other drugs or alcohol were consumed concurrently. Someone who has taken an excessive dose of Chantix can expect to experience exaggerated side effects. In the few incidents that have been reported, victims have experienced extreme drowsiness, fatigue, low blood pressure, accelerated heart rate, dangerously low heart rate, hallucinations, and paranoia. If you think you or someone you know has overdosed on Chantix, call the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If life-threatening symptoms such as not breathing, loss of consciousness, or dangerous hallucinations occur, call 911 emergency services.

Warnings

Chantix may make you dizzy or drowsy. Reports of traffic accidents have been reported with use of Chantix. Do not drive or operate machinery until you know how this medication affects you. You may experience vivid and ominous dreams, or suicidal thinking. Report any suicidal thoughts to your doctor and stop taking Chantix. Drinking alcohol can increase unwanted side effects.
