Cialis Information:
What is Cialis?
Cialis, or tadalafil, is a PDE5 inhibitor drug most commonly used to treat erectile dysfunction. It may also be used to treat BPH or benign enlargement of the prostate and pulmonary arterial hypertension. The medication is marketed under the name Adcirca and given in higher doses to treat pulmonary hypertension. PDE5 inhibitors block the enzyme PDE5 which exists in some smooth muscle tissues in the body. These medications stop the PDE5 enzyme from degrading cGMP, a nucleotide that acts to relax smooth muscle tissues. Relaxed smooth muscle tissue enhances the propensity for erectile function. Cialis differs from other PDE5 inhibitors like Viagra and Levitra in that it has a longer half-life of up to 17.5 hours and may function in the body for up to 36 hours. This is convenient as it is not required to schedule sexual activity as is necessary with some other medications. This is how Cialis has earned the nickname “the weekend pill”. Cialis should not cause an erection without direct sexual stimulation of the penis.
How do I take Cialis?
Cialis comes as a tablet and may be prescribed in dosages ranging from 2.5mg to 20mg. Tablets may be purchased with a subscription from your local pharmacy using a Cialis voucher or coupon to get a discount on the retail price. Take Cialis with a full glass of water 30 minutes before sexual activity. Cialis may last for up to 36 hours. Take this medication as recommended by your doctor for your particular condition. Cialis may be taken as needed (but not more than every 24 hours) or once at the same time every day as prescribed by your doctor.
Before taking Cialis, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to tadalafil or any of the ingredients in the Cialis tablets.
- You are taking or have recently taken nitrates such as isosorbide dinitrate (Isordil), isosorbide mononitrate (Imdur, ISMO), and nitroglycerin (Nitro-BID, Nitro-Dur, Nitroquick, Nitrostat). Ask your doctor if you are not sure whether any of your medications contain nitrates.
- You are taking street drugs containing nitrates such as “poppers”.
- You are taking alpha blockers, other erectile dysfunction medications, antifungals, HIV protease inhibitors, cholesterol medication, high blood pressure medications, other medications for erectile dysfunction, other medications or treatments for PAH, depression or anxiety medication and any other medications you might be taking.
- You are taking St. John's wort.
- You smoke.
- You have ever had an erection that lasted more than 4 hours.
- You have recently had diarrhea, vomiting, not been drinking enough fluids, or sweating a lot which may have caused dehydration.
- You have or have ever had pulmonary veno-occlusive disease.
- You have any condition that affects the shape of the penis.
- You have or have ever had diabetes, high cholesterol, high or low blood pressure, irregular heartbeat, a heart attack or heart failure, angina (chest pain), a stroke, ulcers in the stomach, a bleeding disorder, blood circulation problems, blood cell problems such as sickle cell anemia, multiple myeloma, or leukemia, or heart, kidney, or liver disease.
- You or any of your relatives have or have ever had an eye disease such as retinitis pigmentosa or if you have ever had sudden severe vision loss, especially if you were told that the vision loss was caused by a blockage of blood flow to the nerves that help you see.
- You are a woman and you are taking Cialis to treat PAH, tell your doctor if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding.
- You have ever experienced chest pain during sexual activity.
What if I forget to take a dose of Cialis?
If you are taking Cialis on a regular basis as per your doctor’s recommendation, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue on your regular schedule. Do not take a double dose of Cialis and do not take more than one dose per day.
What are the possible side effects of taking Cialis?
- blurred vision or changes in color vision
- ringing in ears
- erection that lasts longer than 4 hours
- dizziness
- chest pain
- allergic reaction
- difficulty breathing or swallowing
- blistering or peeling of skin
How do I store Cialis?
Store this medication tightly closed in the container it came in. Keep it in a cool, dry place away from heat and moisture. Keep Cialis out of reach of children. Throw away any expired medication. Talk to your pharmacist about the proper disposal of your medication.
What happens if I overdose on Cialis?
An overdose on Cialis may lead to an increase in common side effects as well as chest pain, irregular heartbeat, lightheadedness, dizziness, and nausea. If you or someone you know might have overdosed on Cialis, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-888-222-1222. If the victim has lost consciousness or is not breathing, call 911.
Warnings
Avoid grapefruit juice and grapefruits when taking Cialis as it can prevent the breakdown of Cialis in the body and potentially lead to overdose if taken regularly.
