Cimzia Information:

What is Cimzia?

Cimzia is used to treat Crohn’s disease, an inflammatory bowel disease, when the condition has not improved with other medications. It is in the tumor necrosis factor (TNF) blocker class of drugs, and it works by blocking the action of a substance in the body that causes inflammation. It is sometimes used to treat other inflammatory condition, including moderate to severe psoriatic arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and ankylosing spondylitis.

How do I use Cimzia?

The Cimzia drug is administered through an injection under the skin of the thigh or stomach, typically every two to four weeks. The injection may be administered by a healthcare provider, or your doctor may instruct you to administer it in your home. If you are injecting yourself at home, follow your doctor’s instructions carefully. Let the medication sit at room temperature for half an hour before injecting it; do not heat it in the microwave.

Before taking Cimzia, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to this or any other medications
  • You are taking any other prescription or non-prescription drugs or supplements
  • You or someone in your household has ever had tuberculosis, or you have recently traveled to an area with a high rate of tuberculosis cases
  • You have hepatitis B or are a hepatitis B carrier
  • You have HIV or AIDS
  • You have lupus
  • You currently have or have recently had an infection
  • You have any open sores or broken skin
  • You have congestive heart failure
  • You have a history of cancer
  • You have a seizure disorder
  • You have a disease that affects your nerves or muscles, or you have been experiencing numbness or tingling
  • You have diabetes
  • You have a bone or blood marrow disorder
  • You have recently received the BCG vaccination, or you are scheduled to receive any vaccine
  • You are breastfeeding, pregnant, or trying to become pregnant

What are the possible side effects of taking Cimzia?

Some people who have used Cimzia have reported experiencing injection site irritation, mild diarrhea or constipation, stomach pain, sinus pain, or nasal congestion. If you have any of these side effects and they last a long time or get worse, tell your doctor. Cimzia may weaken your immune system, so tell your doctor right away if you notice signs of a new infection. Stop using the Cimzia drug and contact your doctor immediately if you have any rare but serious side effects, including swollen feet or ankles, an irregular heart rate, painful urination, a severe skin rash, unusual neck stiffness, joint pain, muscle pain or weakness, upper stomach pain, weight loss, vision changes, severe dizziness, unusual fatigue, or seizures. This is not a complete list of possible side effects, and you should always talk to your doctor if you have any side effects that concern you.

What if I forget to use Cimzia?

It is important to stick to the injection schedule that your doctor has given you. If you do forget to administer a dose, contact your doctor so that they can set up a new dosing schedule.

How do I store Cimzia?

Store your carton of Cimzia in the refrigerator. Once you mix the medication powder with a diluent, you should continue to keep it in the refrigerator but should use it within 24 hours. If you notice that the mixed medication has become discolored or has particles floating in it, do not use it. If you are unsure how to safely dispose of expired or unused medication, talk to your pharmacist.

What happens if I overdose on Cimzia?

If you believe that you or someone in your home has injected too much of the Cimzia drug, call Poison Control (1-800-222-1222) to find out what to do.

Warnings

Because Cimzia can weaken your immune system, you should avoid getting any vaccinations while taking this medication, unless your doctor has given you permission to do so. Avoid contact with people who have recently received a live vaccine or who have any kind of contagious infection. You should also be careful when using a sharp implement that can cause cuts, such as razors or nail cutters, since Cimzia can make you bleed more easily.

Brand Names

Because Cimzia is a biologic drug, it is not available as a generic. If you need this brand name medication but are concerned about the cost, remember to get a free Cimzia coupon from HelpRx.
