What is Descovy?
Descovy is a medication that helps treat the HIV-1 virus in patients 12 or older. Descovy contains two active ingredients, emtricitabine and tenofovir, that work in the body to reduce the amount of HIV in the blood and increase CD4+ (T) cells to help the body fight off infections.
How do I take Descovy?
Take Descovy once daily with or without food. You must take Descovy along with other HIV medications in order to suppress the virus. It is very important not to miss any doses of Descovy to receive the maximum benefits of the therapy.
Before taking Descovy, tell your doctor if:
- You have liver problems
- You have hepatitis B or C
- You have kidney problems
- You are pregnant or plant to become pregnant
- You are taking any medications, including vitamins or supplements
- You have any food or drug allergies
What are the possible side effects of taking Descovy?
Taking antiviral medications like Descovy may cause side effects such as: nausea, vomiting, flatulence, trouble sleeping, abnormal dreams, diarrhea, and weight loss. Other side effects associated with Descovy include: changes in fat distribution around the neck, breast or stomach, changes to the immune system, new or worsening kidney problems, including kidney failure, and bone problems. Contact your doctor if you have any severe or persistent side effects.
What if I forget to take a dose of Descovy?
It is important not to miss any doses of Descovy to avoid serious health complications. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is close to your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and only take one pill. It is very important not to take more Descovy than is prescribed to you to avoid health problems.
How do I store Descovy?
Store Descovy in a room with a temperature below 86 degrees Fahrenheit. Keep the Descovy pills in the original container and avoid exposing the pills to extreme heat, moisture, or cold.
What happens if I overdose on Descovy?
Contact your doctor right away if you take too much Descovy. If you experience difficulty breathing or chest pain after a Descovy overdose, call local emergency health services at 911 or Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222.
Warnings
A serious condition called lactic acidosis can occur while taking Descovy. Contact your doctor right away if you feel very tired, feel cold, have difficulty breathing, feel dizzy or lightheaded, or have stomach pain with nausea and vomiting.
