What is Dexpak?
Dexpak is the drug dexamethasone, a corticosteroid prescribed to relieve the inflammation caused by certain conditions such as arthritis, asthma, allergies, and intestinal, blood, skin, thyroid, kidney, and eye disorders. It may also be used in the treatment of certain types of cancer. It works by preventing the release of substances in the body that cause inflammation.
How do I take Dexpak?
Dexpak is administered as a tablet that is taken orally with water and with or without food. The dosing regimen will depend on the condition being treated and the patient profile. Your doctor may alter the schedule over time. Follow the prescription exactly and do not take more or less than the prescribed amount. Do not stop taking Dexpak without first consulting your doctor.
Before taking Dexpak, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to dexamethasone or any of the ingredients in the Dexpak drug
- You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child
- You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins, or supplements
- You are taking oral contraceptives, diuretics, NSAIDs, anticoagulants, analgesics, or medications to treat arthritis
- You are taking digoxin, cyclosporine, ketoconazole, estrogen, rifampin, phenytoin, phenobarbital, or theophylline
- You have a fungal infection
- You have, or have had, diabetes, ulcers, osteoporosis, tuberculosis, seizures, myasthenia gravis, a herpes eye infection, glaucoma, or cataracts
- You have, or have had, depression or a mental illness
- You have or have had, heart disease, hypertension, hypothyroidism, or intestinal, kidney, or liver disease
What are the possible side effects of taking Dexpak?
Some people have reported side effects after taking Dexpak. Less severe symptoms include acne, anxiety, depression, dizziness, easy bruising, headaches, increased hair growth, difficulty sleeping, missed or irregular menstrual periods, restlessness, upset or irritated stomach, and vomiting. If any of these conditions persist or worsen, contact your healthcare provider.
Severe side effects requiring immediate medical attention include signs of an allergic reaction (rash, hives, itching, peeling or blistered skin; swelling of the face, mouth, lips, throat, or tongue; fever; hoarseness; difficulty breathing or swallowing); swelling of the extremities; vision problems; muscle weakness; infections that do not heal or illnesses that linger; black or tarry stools.
What if I forget to take a dose of Dexpak?
If you forget to take your scheduled dose of Dexpak, contact your physician for instructions. Do not increase the dosage or change the regimen to make up for one that was missed.
How do I store Dexpak?
Keep Dexpak tightly sealed in its original packaging, out of the reach of children and away from extremes of temperature and humidity. Dispose of any unused tablets according to the instructions of your pharmacist.
What happens if I overdose on Dexpak?
If an overdose of Dexpak is suspected, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has stopped breathing or lost consciousness, contact Emergency Services at 911.
Warnings
Carry a card or wear a bracelet indicating that you are taking Dexpak. Contact your doctor if you become pregnant while taking this medication. Limit alcohol consumption. Do not receive a live vaccine while taking Dexpak. This drug may decrease your resistance to illness. This medication may have an impact on certain medical tests, such as those for blood sugar levels. Dexpak may cause vision problems; do not drive, operate heavy machinery or equipment, use power tools, or handle firearms until its effects are known. Sudden cessation of Dexpak use may result in severe withdrawal symptoms.
Brand Names
Dexpak is a brand name of the corticosteroid dexamethasone. It is also marketed under the brand names Decadron, Dexpak 6-Day Taperpak, Dexpak 10-Day Taperpak, Dexpak 13-Day Taperpak, Dexpak Jr., Baycadron, Zema Pak 6 Day, Zema Pak 10 Day, and Zema Pak 13-Day, and Dexamethasone Intensol. However, these medications shouldn’t be substituted for each other without written medical permission.
