Dilantin Information:
What is Dilantin?
Dilantin is an anticonvulsant (anti-seizure) medication of the hydantoin class and is prescribed to help treat seizures caused by epilepsy or to prevent and treat seizures that may develop following brain surgery. Its effectiveness lies in its ability to decrease the electrical impulses and activity in the brain. It may also be prescribed to help control arrhythmia.
How do I take Dilantin?
The Dilantin drug is an oral prescription medication taken from one to four times a day depending on the prescription strength and its formulation. Take the medication at the same time(s) every day in order to establish an administration regimen. If you were prescribed the chewable tablets, you may either chew them or swallow them whole. If you are taking the capsule, consume it whole; do not crush, chew, or split the capsule. For the Dilantin oral suspension, shake it thoroughly and use an accurate measuring device for administration. If you are taking nourishment and medications intravenously, your doctor will discuss proper administration of the medication.
Before taking Dilantin, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to phenytoin, any hydantoin medications, carbamazepine, or other medications
- You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child
- You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, including NSAIDS, and if you are taking any vitamins or supplements
- You are taking medications of any kind, for any condition
- You are taking anti-coagulants, antidepressants, H2 antagonists, diazepam, quinidine, digoxin, or sulfa antibiotics
- You are taking hormone-based contraceptives, oral steroids, amiodarone, chloramphenicol, or doxycycline
- You are undergoing hormone replacement therapy
- You are taking medications to treat depression or a mental illness
- You are taking medications for nausea or antacids that contain calcium
- You are taking medication to treat seizures
- You have, or have had, diabetes, kidney disease, liver disease, or porphyria
What are the possible side effects of taking Dilantin?
Some patients have reported side effects when taking this medication. Less severe Dilantin side effects include sleep problems, enlarged lips or gums, changes in facial structure, gastrointestinal problems including vomiting, nausea, and constipation; dizziness, disorientation, confusion, and slurred speech; loss of coordination, bodily tremors, and unusual movement of the eyes. If any of these symptoms worsen or persist, contact your physician.
Serious Dilantin side effects requiring immediate medical attention include extreme fatigue, fever, joint pain, and other flu-like symptoms; blisters or rash; swollen glands; signs of jaundice; unexplained bruising or bleeding; and pain in the upper right section of the stomach.
What if I forget to take a dose of Dilantin?
If you forget to take your scheduled dose of the Dilantin drug, take it as soon as you remember and are able, unless the time is near for the next one. In this is the case, forego the missed dose and resume the normal schedule. Do not take multiple doses of this medication to make up for one missed.
How do I store Dilantin?
Keep Dilantin tightly sealed in its original container out of the reach of children and away from extremes of temperature and humidity. Do not allow the oral suspension to freeze. Dispose of any unused or expired doses according the instructions of your pharmacist.
What happens if I overdose on Dilantin?
If the person taking Dilantin is believed to have overdosed on this medication, contact the Poison Control center at 1-800-222-1222. If he or she has lost consciousness or has stopped breathing, contact Emergency Services at 911. Some symptoms of a Dilantin drug overdose include tremors, nausea or vomiting, disorientation, lack of muscle control or slurred speech, and rapid uncontrolled eye movement.
Warnings
Stop taking Dilantin if you become pregnant while taking it; Dilantin poses an increased risk of developing osteomalacia, Hodgkin’s and other diseases of the lymph nodes and system.
