Elidel Information:
What is Elidel?
Elidel is a topical cream that is used to control the symptoms of eczema, a skin disease that causes the skin to be dry and itchy and to sometimes develop red, scaly rashes). Elidel is used to treat patients who are unable to control eczema through other medication. Elidel belongs to a class of medications called topical calcineurin inhibitors and works by stopping the immune system from producing substances that may cause eczema.
How do I take Elidel?
Use an Elidel coupon from HelpRx to reduce the price when you fill your prescription. Elidel comes as a cream and is meant for topical use only. Typically it is applied twice a day for up to 6 weeks at a time. To apply, first wash your hands with soap and water and be sure that the skin in the affected area is dry. Elidel is best applied in a thin layer to affected areas. After applying, rub the cream into the skin completely. After application, wash hands with soap and water to remove any leftover medication. It is safe to cover the treated areas with normal clothing, but do not wrap or bandage.
Before taking Elidel, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to Elidel or any other medications
- If you are taking any prescription and nonprescription medications, vitamins, nutritional supplements, or herbal products
- If you have or have ever had Netherton's Syndrome (an inherited condition that causes the skin to be red, itchy, and scaly)
- If you have experienced redness and peeling of most of your skin, any other skin disease, or any type of skin infection, especially chicken pox, shingles, herpes, or eczema herpeticum (viral infection that causes fluid filled blisters to form on the skin of people who have eczema)
- If your eczema rash has turned crusty or blistered or if you think that your eczema rash is infected
- If you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
- If you plan on consuming alcohol during your treatment with Elidel
What are the possible side effects of taking Elidel?
If you experience any of the following symptoms, your doctor should be contacted immediately: Sore or red throat, fever, flu-like symptoms, ear pain, discharge, and other signs of infection, hives, new or worsening rash, itching, swelling of the face, throat, tongue, lips, eyes, hands, feet, ankles, or lower legs, difficulty breathing or swallowing, crusting, oozing, blistering or other signs of skin infection, cold sores, chicken pox or other blisters, or swollen glands in the neck.
Less serious side effects that should still be discussed with your doctor include: Burning, warmth, stinging, soreness, or redness in the areas where you applied Elidel, warts, bumps, or other growths on skin, eye irritation, headache, cough, red, stuffy or runny nose, nosebleed, diarrhea, or painful menstrual periods.
What if I forget to take a dose of Elidel?
Apply the missed dose as soon as you remember it. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, it is okay to skip the missed dose and continue the regular dosing schedule. Do not apply extra cream to make up for a missed dose.
How do I store Elidel?
Elidel should remain in the container it came in, tightly closed, and out of reach of children. Store it at room temperature and away from excess heat and moisture. Discard any medication that is outdated or no longer needed.
What happens if I overdose on Elidel?

However, seek immediate medical attention if you notice any of the following symptoms: rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, trouble breathing. Warnings
If drinking alcohol while using Elidel, the user’s face may become flushed or red or feel warm to the touch. It is important to avoid exposure to chicken pox, shingles and other viruses while using Elidel. Discuss any other topical products you use or may use while using Elidel. Elidel does make skin more sensitive to the sun. Avoid prolonged sun exposure, tanning booths and sunlamps. Use a sunscreen and wear protective clothing when outdoors. Use this medication only on the skin, exactly as it was prescribed.
A small number of patients who have used Elidel or another similar medication developed skin cancer or lymphoma (cancer in a part of the immune system). Though there is not enough research available to determine if the use of these types of topical are the direct cause. Because of the potential risk, Elidel should only be used as needed and discontinued once skin improves. Elidel should not be used on children under the age of 2. Avoid eating or drinking grapefruit products while using Elidel.
Brand Names
Elidel is currently the only brand name product available that contains pimecrolimus cream. This is why the Elidel retail cost is in the hundreds of dollars. Use our Elidel coupons or discount card to lower the cost in your local pharmacy.
