What is Equetro?
Equetro is a drug used to treat acute or mixed episodes from bipolar disorder. Carbamazepine is a type of mood stabilizer that is also an anticonvulsant. It is prescribed under the generic name and other brand names to treat seizures. It is uncertain how carbamazepine works to treat bipolar disorder, but it is known that it potentiates GABA receptors, which has a calming effect on the central nervous system.
How do I take Equetro?
Equetro is normally taken twice daily. Your doctor will start you on 200mg pills and will slowly increase your dose if needed. Equetro pills should be taken with food, if possible, to avoid nausea. Do not drink grapefruit juice or eat grapefruit while taking Equetro. Try to take your medication at the same time every day. Always follow your doctor’s instructions for taking your medication. You should notice your symptoms getting better after three weeks of taking this medication. Tell your doctor if nothing changes after three weeks.
Before taking Equetro, tell your doctor if:
- You are of Asian descent. (This means you have an increased risk of having a life-threatening reaction to this medication.)
- You are allergic to carbamazepine or any of the other ingredients in Equetro.
- You have or have ever had a seizure.
- You are taking other prescription or nonprescription medications, especially antidepressants, antipsychotics, anticonvulsants, anticoagulants, Tylenol or acetaminophen, sedatives, antifungals, quinine and antibiotics.
- You are taking any vitamins or herbal supplements, especially vitamin B and St. John’s wort.
- You are pregnant or breastfeeding.
- You have glaucoma.
- You have kidney, liver or heart disease.
- You have thyroid problems.
- You have psychosis or any other mental conditions.
- You have ever had a low blood cell count.
What are the possible side effects of taking Equetro?
Possible side effects from taking Equetro include dizziness, drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, dry mouth, indigestion, feeling unsteady, headache and back pain. If any of these side effects are severe, tell your doctor as soon as possible. Serious side effects that should be reported immediately include panic attacks, unusual aggression, anxiety, depression, preoccupation with death or dying, worsening of symptoms, confusion, withdrawal from society, chest pain, vision problems, easily bleeding or bruising, tiny purple dots on the skin, sore throat, fever, and yellowing of the skin or eyes.
What if I forget to take a dose of Equetro?
If you forget to take a dose of Equetro, take the missed dose as soon as you remember it. It if it’s almost time for your next pill, skip the missed dose and continue on your regular routine. Never take a double dose of Equetro to try to compensate for a missed one.
How do I store Equetro?
Store Equetro at a temperature between 59 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit. Protect this medication from light and moisture and keep it out of reach of children and pets.
What happens if I overdose on Equetro?
Signs of overdose on Equetro include loss of consciousness, convulsions, twitching or tremors, drowsiness, rapid involuntary eye movement, irregular or slow breathing, nausea and vomiting. All of these symptoms may not occur. If you think someone has overdosed on Equetro, call the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the victim is unconscious or not breathing, call 911.
Warnings
Carbamazepine may cause a severe allergic reaction referred to as Stevens-Johnson syndrome. It may also decrease red blood cell count or change your mood in unexpected or negative ways. Tell your doctor immediately if you experience suicidal thoughts. Drinking alcohol with this medication can be dangerous. Ask your doctor about drinking while taking Equetro.
Brand Names
