Errin Information:
What is Errin?
Errin is different from other birth controls because it contains only the hormone progestin (norethindrone) while most birth control pills contain both estrogen and progestin. This type of birth control is also known as the “minipill”. Progestin only pills are good for those who have high blood pressure or are at risk for developing blood clots. It is also a safer birth control pill for women who are breast feeding. Errin birth control works by preventing ovulation, thickening cervical mucus. It also lowers levels of LH and FSH hormones that promote ovulation. Although progestin-only pills like Errin are safer, they are also less effective. These pills must be taken exactly on schedule, and they don’t always prevent ovulation.
How do I take Errin?
Errin birth control comes in a package of 6 blister packs that contain 28 pills each. Errin birth control pills must be taken at exactly the same time every day to avoid pregnancy. Progestin-only pills such as Errin are more reliant on consistent dosing than regular birth control pills. If you are switching to Errin from a regular combination birth control pill, start your pack the day after you finish your last active pill. Take one pill every day until you finish the blister pack, and then continue with a new pack. There are no breaks between packs. Each pill contains the same amount of norethindrone (.35 mg), so there is no need to worry about different kinds of pills for each week, or varying instructions for missing a pill.
Before taking Errin, tell your doctor if:
- You are pregnant or planning to become pregnant.
- You have had breast cancer or any cancer of the reproductive system.
- You have diabetes or high blood sugar.
- You have liver disease or you have or have had tumors in the liver.
- You have migraine headaches.
- You are allergic to any of the ingredients in Errin pills.
- You smoke cigarettes.
- You are taking prescription or nonprescription drugs, especially anticonvulsants, barbiturates, and rifampin.
What are the possible side effects of taking Errin?
Possible side effects from taking Errin include breast pain or tenderness, acne, changes in menstrual bleeding, decreased libido, mild headache, cramping, bloating, nausea, and weight gain. Call your doctor immediately if you experience chest pain, sweating, pain spreading to the shoulder and arm, pelvic or abdominal pain, numbness or weakness on one side of the body, swelling in the legs, acute headache, eye pain, depression or trouble sleeping. These could be signs of a more serious side effect.
What if I forget to take a dose of Errin?
If you miss a dose of Errin take the missed pill as soon as you remember it. If you missed the dose by three hours or more, you will need to use back-up contraception, such as a condom, for at least 48 hours to prevent pregnancy.
How do I store Errin?
Store Errin birth control in a place where you will always remember to take it at the same time every day. Keep these pills at a room temperature between 59 and 77 degrees Fahrenheit.
What happens if I overdose on Errin?
There have been no reports of overdose on Errin or any progesterone-only birth control pills, even in cases where children have taken them.
Warnings
Progestin only birth control may cause ovarian cysts that are usually harmless and disappear on their own. These types of contraceptives have also been known to cause ectopic pregnancy, or pregnancy outside the uterus. If you become pregnant while using Errin and have abdominal pain, see your doctor at once.
