Gris-Peg Information:
What is Gris-PEG?
Gris-PEG is an antifungal drug. It is an oral medication, and it is primarily prescribed to treat skin, hair, or nail fungal infections that haven’t responded to treatment with a topical antifungal. It stops the growth of the fungus causing the infection, which will help relieve symptoms such as itchiness, flaky or peeling skin, or nail discoloration.
How do I take Gris-PEG?
Your Gris-PEG dosage and duration of treatment will depend on the type of fungal infection and your response to treatment, so follow your doctor’s directions closely. It is usually a good idea to take this oral medication with a full meal so that it is more efficiently absorbed into your body. Take Gris-PEG at the same time every day so that the amount of medicine in your body remains consistent.
Before taking Gris-PEG, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to this or any other medications
- You are taking any other prescription or non-prescription drugs or supplements
- You have liver failure
- You have porphyria (a blood disorder)
- You are breastfeeding, pregnant, or trying to become pregnant
What are the possible side effects of taking Gris-PEG?
The Gris-PEG drug may cause upset stomach, nausea, vomiting, headache, dizziness, fatigue, or difficulty sleeping. If you have any of these side effects, they will likely subside as your body adjusts to the medication. Let your doctor know if you have any adverse effects that last a long time or become bothersome. Serious side effects are unlikely, but call your doctor immediately if you do have any unusual side effects, including changes in your mental state, numbness in your hands or feet, hearing changes, skin rash, joint or muscle pain, jaundice, severe abdominal pain, changes in appearance or amount of urine, or signs of a new infection (including oral thrush or a vaginal yeast infection).
What if I forget to take a dose of Gris-PEG?
Take the missed dose right away when you remember it, unless it is almost time for your next scheduled dose. In this case, skip the missed dose and take the next one at the regular time. Don’t increase the amount of medication you normally take for a single dose.
How do I store Gris-PEG?
Store the Gris-PEG medicine in its original container at room temperature. Keep it in a dry space away from bright light and out of reach of any pets or children in your home.
What happens if I overdose on Gris-PEG?
It is not known if an overdose of Gris-PEG is harmful, but if you are concerned that you or someone in your household has overdosed on this drug, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222.
Warnings
Due to the Gris-PEG drug’s potential to cause dizziness, it is best to avoid driving, operating heavy machinery, and performing other activities that require alertness until you know how the medicine affects you.
Brand Names
Gris-PEG is the brand name form of griseofulvin. Other brand name drugs containing griseofulvin include Fulvicin, Grifulvin V, and Grisactin. Keep in mind that these medications may not all be used to treat the same types of fungal infections, so talk to your doctor to determine which drug is right for your condition.
