Introvale Information:

What is Introvale?

Introvale is an oral contraceptive containing levonorgestrel (a progestin hormone) and ethinyl estradiol (an estrogen hormone). It helps prevent pregnancy by stopping ovulation and changing the consistency of vaginal fluid in order to keep sperm from fertilizing an egg. It may also be used to reduce the risk of developing ovarian cysts, decrease blood loss during periods, treat acne, and make periods more regular. Women who use this form of birth control should only have a period once every three months.

How do I take Introvale?

If you are just starting to use this type of hormonal birth control, take the first pill in the pack the first Sunday after your period begins. Continue to take one pill per day at the same time every day. The first 84 pills in the packet are active, meaning they contain female hormones, and the last 7 are inactive ‘reminder’ pills, which don’t contain hormones. You should get your period during the week you take the inactive pills. Always start a new pack of Introvale the day after you take the last inactive pill; be sure to refill your prescription before you run out so that you don’t miss any days.

Before taking Introvale, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to this or any other medications
  • You are taking any other prescription or non-prescription medicines or supplements
  • You have risk factors for blood clots (e.g. you smoke and are over 35)
  • You have heart problems or high blood pressure
  • You have a personal or family history of hormone-related cancer or an abnormal mammogram
  • You have any diabetes complications
  • You get severe migraines
  • You have unexplained vaginal bleeding
  • You have had jaundice during pregnancy or while taking birth control pills
  • You have high cholesterol or triglycerides
  • You have epilepsy
  • You have an underactive thyroid
  • You have gallbladder disease
  • You have tuberculosis
  • You have a history of depression
  • You are breastfeeding or have recently given birth

What are the possible side effects of taking Introvale?

Introvale may cause mild nausea, bloating, breast tenderness, stomach cramps, or light vaginal bleeding between periods, especially in the first few months of use. If you have any side effects that become bothersome, tell your doctor. Stop taking Introvale and contact your doctor right away if you have any rare but serious side effects, such as breast lumps, pain or swelling in your legs, unusual vaginal bleeding, severe migraines, upper stomach pain, clay-colored stools, dark urine, jaundice, depression, or signs of a heart attack.

What if I forget to take a dose of Introvale?

If you miss one active pill, take it as soon as you remember, even if that means taking two pills in the same day. If you miss two active pills in a row, take two pills for the next two days, and then resume your regular dosing schedule. If you miss three active pills, skip them and continue taking one pill per day to finish the package. If you miss two or more active pills, use a backup form of birth control for at least seven days. If you miss any inactive pills, throw them away.

How do I store Introvale?

Do not keep Introvale in the bathroom. Store your medication packages in a dry space at room temperature, out of reach of children and pets.

What happens if I overdose on Introvale?

Overdosing on Introvale may cause abnormal vaginal bleeding or severe nausea and vomiting. If you believe that you or someone in your household has overdosed, call Poison Control (1-800-222-1222) to find out what to do.

Warnings

Do not smoke while taking Introvale, since smoking increases your risk for blood clots, heart attack, and stroke. Keep in mind that oral birth control drugs like Introvale won’t stop the spread of sexually transmitted diseases.
