Jinteli Information:

What is Jinteli?

Jinteli is a prescription medication containing ethinyl estradiol (an estrogen) and norethindrone (a progestin), two female hormones. It is sometimes used during menopause, when a sudden drop in estrogen production can cause unpleasant symptoms such as hot flashes and vaginal irritation. The Jinteli drug helps relieve hot flashes and reduces the risk of getting osteoporosis (thinning of the bones).

How do I take Jinteli?

Take a Jinteli tablet once a day, at the same time every day. Always refill your prescription before you run out so that you don’t miss any days. Because Jinteli can increase your risk for breast cancer, you will likely need to schedule regular physical exams with your doctor and check for breast lumps at home once a month.

Before taking Jinteli, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to this or any other medications
  • You are taking any other prescription or non-prescription drugs or supplements
  • You have had your uterus removed (a hysterectomy)
  • You have any heart, liver, or kidney problems
  • You have had a heart attack or stroke in the past year
  • You have or have had blood clots or circulation problems
  • You will need to be on bed rest after surgery
  • You have high calcium levels in your blood
  • You have a personal or family history of hormone-related cancer or have had an abnormal mammogram
  • You have asthma
  • You have epilepsy
  • You have a thyroid disorder
  • You have fibroid tumors in your uterus
  • You get migraines or have a history of depression
  • You have lupus
  • You are breastfeeding or pregnant

What are the possible side effects of taking Jinteli?

In very rare cases, the Jinteli drug may cause breast or reproductive system cancer, blood clots, heart attack, stroke, or gallbladder problems. Watch out for warning signs including abnormal vaginal bleeding, new breast lumps, pain in legs or chest, severe headaches, difficulty breathing, changes in vision, jaundice, or fainting, and contact your doctor immediately if you have any of these side effects. More common but less serious side effects may include breast tenderness, stomach cramps, nausea, vomiting, temporary hair loss, and headaches. Let your doctor know if you have any mild side effects that persist or get worse, or if you have any other side effects that concern you.

What if I forget to take a dose of Jinteli?

To get the most benefit from Jinteli, you will need to take it at the same time every day. If you do forget, take the missed tablet as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for your next dose. In this case, skip the missed dose and resume your normal dosage schedule. Do not take two tablets at the same time.

How do I store Jinteli?

Store Jinteli at room temperature, out of reach of any children or pets in your home. Do not keep it in the bathroom, where the humidity and heat may be too high. If you no longer need this medication but aren’t sure how to safely dispose of it, talk to your pharmacist.

What happens if I overdose on Jinteli?

Possible signs of overdose include severe side effects. If you or someone in your household overdoses on Jinteli, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 or go to the nearest emergency room.

Warnings

Do not smoke while using the Jinteli drug; smoking may increase your risk for heart attacks, strokes, and blood clots. Do not use this medication if you have had a hysterectomy, as women who have had their uterus removed should not take a hormone replacement drug with progestin. Check in with your doctor every three to six months to determine if you should keep using Jinteli.

Brand Names

Jinteli is also available under the brand names Jevantique and Femhrt. If your doctor prescribes you any hormone replacement drug to treat your menopause symptoms, get a free coupon for Jinteli or any similar drugs on HelpRx in order to save money on your medication.
