What is Kapvay?
Kapvay is an extended release medication and is the brand name of the alpha-2 adrenergic agent clonidine, a medication that affects the central nervous system and the part of the brain that controls attention and impulsive behavior in those diagnosed with ADHD; for those with hypertension, its effectiveness lies in its ability to decrease heartrate and relax blood vessels.
How do I take Kapvay?
The Kapvay drug is administered orally, in tablet form; it is taken once a day, or according to the doctor’s instructions, with water or approved liquid. Because this medication is in tablet form, it must be swallowed whole, without crushing it or chewing it. Those who have difficulty swallowing tablets should speak with their healthcare provide for Kapvay patient assistance.
Before taking Kapvay, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to clonidine, or any of the ingredients in the Kapvay drug
- You are allergic to any medications
- You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child
- You are taking any non-prescription medications, vitamins, or supplements
- You are taking beta-blockers, digoxin, or calcium channel blockers
- You are taking antidepressants, tricyclic antidepressants, anxiety medications, or medications to treat mental illness
- You are taking anti-seizure medications, sedatives, or tranquilizers
- You have, or have had, a heart attack, stroke, or heart disease
- You have kidney disease
- You are 65 or older
What are the possible side effects of taking Kapvay?
Some patients have reported side effects after taking Kapvay. Less severe symptoms include constipation, nausea, headache, weakness or malaise, dry mouth, vomiting, diminished sexual ability or interest, nervousness, or agitation. If any of these persist or worsen, contact your healthcare provider.
Severe side effects requiring immediate medical attention include signs of an allergic reaction (hives, rash, itching, swelling of the lips, tongue, mouth, throat, face, or difficulty breathing or swallowing), or loss of consciousness.
What if I forget to take a dose of Kapvay?
If you forget to take your scheduled dose of Kapvay, do so as soon as you remember and are able. However, if the time is near for the next scheduled dose, skip the missed Kapvay tablet, and resume the normal schedule. Do not take multiple doses to make up for the one that was missed.
How do I store Kapvay?
Store Kapvay in its original container, keeping it tightly sealed, away from the extremes of temperature and humidity, and out of the reach of children. Safely dispose of any expired or unused tablets in accordance with the instructions of your pharmacist.
What happens if I overdose on Kapvay?
If an overdose of Kapvay is suspected, contact the Poison Control center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has stopped breathing or become unconscious, contact Emergency Services at 911 for Kapvay patient assistance. Symptoms of an overdose include slowed heart rate, fainting, breathing problems, confusion, constricted pupils, slurring of speech, feeling tired or weak, shivering, or clammy skin.
Warnings
The Kapvay drug may induce dizziness or sleepiness; do not drive, operate heavy machinery, or use power tools until the effects of this medication are known. Drinking alcohol can exacerbate any side effects of Kapvay. Contact your doctor if you become pregnant while taking this medication. Kapvay may cause lightheadedness, dizziness, or fainting when rising from a seated or prone position; as a precaution, stand slowly and while holding onto something stable.
