Kariva Information:
What is kariva?
Kariva, a contraceptive drug, combines ethinyl estradiol and desogestrel (an estrogen and progestin, respectively), and is prescribed to prevent ovulation and, subsequently, pregnancy. In combination, these hormones also change the makeup of cervical mucus and the uterine lining, thereby prevent an egg from attaching to the uterine wall. Doctors may also prescribe kariva pills to women who have premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PDD) or who need help controlling acne.
How do I take kariva?
Kariva pills are sold in packets of 28 tablets with one taken each day. The first twenty-one pills contain the active medications with the remainder serving to help maintain the routine. The first pill should be taken on the first day of your menstrual cycle or on the Sunday immediately following its commencement. Continue to take each of the tablets in the package, one each day, in their proper order until no more remain. A new cycle (and packet) of pills should begin the next day. Those who are taking oral contraceptives for the first time should utilize alternative birth control measures for the first seven days. Taking them with food or milk can prevent nausea. Contact your healthcare provider before you stop taking kariva.
