Lanoxin Information:
What is Lanoxin?
Lanoxin is the drug digoxin, a cardiac glycoside prescribed to treat congestive heart failure and atrial fibrillation (arrhythmia). It may also be used after a heart attack and to treat angina. It works by helping the heart beat faster and with a steady rhythm.
How do I take Lanoxin?
Lanoxin is administered in tablet form and is taken orally, once a day, with water. The dosage strength will be determined by the patient’s medical profile and the condition being treated. This medication will not cure your condition, so continue taking it even if you feel well. Your doctor may place you on a low sodium, high potassium diet.
Before taking Lanoxin, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to digoxin, digitoxin, or an of the ingredients in the Lanoxin drug
- You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child
- You are taking any medications, vitamins, or supplements including antacids or calcium
- You are taking antibiotics, corticosteroids, or diuretics
- You have thyroid problems
- You have kidney disease
- You have a history of cancer
- You have arrhythmia or other heart problems
What are the possible side effects of taking Lanoxin?
Some patients have reported side effects after taking their Lanoxin medicine. Mild side effects may include dizziness, drowsiness, arrhythmia, lightheadedness, mild rash, and vision changes. If these conditions do not go away, or if they get worse, contact your doctor. Severe side effects requiring immediate medical attention may also appear. These can include symptoms of an allergic reaction, appetite loss, diarrhea, swelling of the feet or hands, sudden or unusual weight gain, nausea, vomiting, or problems breathing.
What if I forget to take a dose of Lanoxin?
If you forget your scheduled dose of Lanoxin, take the pill as soon as you remember and are able. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed one and resume the original schedule. Do not increase the dosage or change the schedule to make up for a dose that was missed.
How do I store Lanoxin?
Keep the Lanoxin medicine tightly sealed in its original container, out of the reach of children and away from heat, moisture, and light (do not store it in a bathroom). Speak with your doctor or pharmacist about the safe disposal of any expired or unused pills.
What happens if I overdose on Lanoxin?
If an overdose of Lanoxin is suspected, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has stopped breathing or lost consciousness, contact Emergency Services at 911.
Warnings
Do not take Lanoxin if you have ventricular fibrillation. This medication may make you dizzy or drowsy; do not drive or perform other tasks that require clear focus until its effects are known. Contact your doctor if you become pregnant while taking Lanoxin.
