Metoclopramide Information:
The drug metoclopramide is a dopamine receptor agonist. It causes muscles to contract in the upper digestive tract, which allows the stomach to empty into the intestines more quickly, reducing heartburn. This medication may be prescribed for the short-term (usually 4 to 12 weeks) treatment of GERD-related heartburn when other drugs haven’t been effective. It is also sometimes prescribed to patients who have a diabetes complication called gastroparesis (poor emptying of the stomach). In some cases, it is also prescribed to prevent nausea and vomiting in people who are undergoing chemotherapy or radiation treatment.
Your doctor will determine the appropriate dose based on your weight, condition, and response to treatment. Adhere to your doctor’s dosing instructions; taking metoclopramide more often or in larger doses than needed increases your risk for a serious movement disorder. If you are taking the standard tablet, swallow it whole. If you are taking the orally disintegrating tablet, place it on your tongue and allow it to dissolve in your mouth. If you are taking the oral solution, use the dose-measuring device that comes with your prescription. Take each dose about half an hour before eating.
Before taking metoclopramide, tell your doctor if:
· You have any food or drug allergies
· You have a blockage, a perforation, or bleeding in your stomach or intestines
· You have a tumor on your adrenal gland
· You have a seizure disorder
· You have liver or kidney disease
· You have high blood pressure or heart problems
· You have diabetes
· You have breast cancer
· You have Parkinson’s disease
· You have a history of mental illness
Mild side effects of metoclopramide may include dizziness, drowsiness, headache, agitation, difficulty sleeping, or diarrhea. If any of these side effects persists or becomes severe, tell your doctor. Stop taking metoclopramide and call your doctor as soon as possible if you experience sudden weight gain, shortness of breath, jaundice, unusual mood changes, hallucinations, coordination problems, muscle stiffness, high fever, sweating, irregular heart rate, confusion, severe lightheadedness, or seizures. Get emergency medical attention if you experience tremors in your arms or legs or uncontrolled muscle movements anywhere in your body. This is not a complete list of side effects; discuss all the risks and benefits of this medication with your doctor.
Take the forgotten dose once you remember, unless it’s almost time for the next scheduled dose. In this case, skip the missed dose and take the next one at the regular time. Don’t double your dose to catch up.
Keep metoclopramide in a tightly sealed container when not in use. Store it at room temperature, away from light and moisture. Keep this and all other prescription drugs out of reach of pets and children. If you need to dispose of leftover medication, ask your pharmacist how to do so safely.
Seek medical attention right away if you overdose on metoclopramide. Symptoms of an overdose may include confusion, drowsiness, tremors, uncontrolled facial muscle movements, and seizures.
Warnings
Don’t take two forms of metoclopramide at the same time. Because this drug can cause dizziness or drowsiness, you should avoid driving and operating heavy machinery until you know you can do so safely. Avoid drinking alcohol while taking this medication, as alcohol may make certain side effects worse. You may experience withdrawal symptoms such as dizziness, headache, and nervousness after you stop taking metoclopramide; ask your doctor how to minimize your risk of these adverse effects.
