Neoral Information:

What is Neoral?

Neoral contains an immunosuppressant drug called cyclosporine. This drug suppresses the body’s immune system. This can be helpful to patients with autoimmune diseases and patients that have undergone an organ transplant. It works by suppressing T-cells. This means that patients taking Neoral must be careful not to get sick, and avoid others that have colds, flus or other contagious illnesses when possible.

How do I take Neoral?

Neoral comes in the form of a capsule or an oral solution. It is normally taken twice daily at the same time every day, and a regular meal schedule should be followed. Always follow your doctor’s dosing instructions. Do not eat grapefruit or drink grapefruit juice while taking this medication. Your doctor will schedule regular appointments for testing to see how Neoral is affecting your body. Be sure to keep your appointments.

Before taking Neoral, tell your doctor if:

  • You’ve ever had kidney disease or you have any kidney problems.
  • You have ever had any kind of cancer.
  • You have high blood pressure.
  • You are receiving any type of UVB, light or radiation therapy.
  • You’ve ever had liver disease.
  • You’ve never had chicken pox.
  • You’ve ever had shingles or any recurrent infections.
  • You have diabetes.
  • You have seizures.
  • You have high cholesterol levels.
  • You regularly drink alcohol or smoke cigarettes.
  • You are allergic to any of the ingredients in Neoral.
  • You are taking any other prescription or nonprescription drugs, including other immunosuppressants, drugs for high cholesterol or high blood pressure, antivirals or antiretrovirals, steroids, diuretics, birth control pills, NSAIDs, antifungals and antibiotics.
  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding.

What are the possible side effects of taking Neoral?

Possible drug side effects from Neoral include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, extra hair growth, gum tissue growth, swollen or red gums, dizziness, acne, cramps, flushing and elevated blood pressure. If any of these side effects are severe or persistent, talk to your doctor. Serious side effects that you should report immediately include hearing problems, yellow skin or eyes, vomit that resembles coffee grinds, severe abdominal pain, muscle spasms, fast or irregular heartbeat, trouble speaking, loss of coordination, tingling or numbness in the hands or feet or on one side of the body, signs of infection, night sweats, chest pain, seizures, confusion, and easily bleeding or bruising.

What if I forget to take a dose of Neoral?

If you miss a dose of Neoral, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it’s almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue on your regular regimen. If you miss more than one dose, talk to your doctor.

How do I store Neoral?

Store Neoral in its original container at a temperature between 68 and 77 degrees Fahrenheit. Keep this medication out of reach of children and pets. A supply of Neoral should be used within two months. Ask your pharmacist about the proper disposal of any unused medication.

What happens if I overdose on Neoral?

Signs of overdose on Neoral may include nausea, vomiting, drowsiness, jaundice, headache and fast heart rate. If you think you or someone you know has overdosed on Neoral, call the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If symptoms are severe or the victim is unconscious or not breathing, call 911.
