Paclitaxel Information:

This medicine is a chemotherapy medicine used to treat certain types of ovarian, lung, or breast cancer in certain patients. It is also used to treat AIDS-related Kaposi sarcoma in certain patients. It may also be used to treat other cancers as determined by your doctor.
Follow the directions for using this medicine provided by your doctor. This medicine may come with a patient information leaflet. Read it carefully. THIS MEDICINE IS USUALLY ADMINISTERED as an injection at your doctor's office or clinic. Ask your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist any questions you may have about this medicine. IF THE MEDICINE CONTAINS PARTICLES or is discolored, or if the vial is cracked or damaged in any way, do not use it. WEAR GLOVES while handling this medicine. IF THIS MEDICINE ACCIDENTALLY SPILLS ON YOUR SKIN, wash it off immediately with soap and water. If you get this medicine in your eyes, nose, or mouth, wash the area immediately with water. IF NAUSEA, VOMITING, DIARRHEA, OR LOSS OF APPETITE OCCURS, do not discontinue your medicine. Ask your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist for ways to lessen these effects. IF MODERATE TO SEVERE DIARRHEA OCCURS during or after treatment with this medicine, check with your doctor or pharmacist. Do not treat it with non-prescription (over-the-counter) medicines. YOU SHOULD RECEIVE CERTAIN OTHER MEDICINES, such as corticosteroids (eg, prednisone), diphenhydramine, and H2 blockers (eg, famotidine), before each treatment with this medicine to decrease the chance of an allergic reaction. Discuss any questions with your doctor. This medicine is handled and stored by a health care provider. KEEP THIS MEDICINE, as well as syringes and needles, out of reach of children and pets. IF YOU MISS A DOSE OF THIS MEDICINE, contact your doctor immediately.
WARNING: This medicine must be administered in an appropriate medical setting. Serious allergic reactions, some fatal, have occurred with the use of this medicine. DO NOT use this medicine again if you have experienced a severe allergic reaction to it. Stop using this medicine and notify your doctor immediately if you develop signs of an allergic reaction, such as rash; itching; fainting; severe dizziness or light-headedness; swelling of hands, face, lips, eyes, throat, or tongue; difficulty swallowing or breathing; or hoarseness. CERTAIN PATIENTS with solid tumors or AIDS-related Kaposi sarcoma should not use this medicine. Frequent blood tests should be performed while you are using this medicine because of the risk of bone marrow suppression and serious infection. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE or interchange this medicine with other forms of paclitaxel. Some medicines or medical conditions may interact with this medicine. INFORM YOUR DOCTOR OR PHARMACIST of all prescription and over-the-counter medicine that you are taking. DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE if you have taken or will be taking palifermin within 24 hours before or after using this medicine. ADDITIONAL MONITORING OF YOU DOSE OR CONDITION may be needed if you are taking anticoagulants (eg, warfarin), azole antifungals (eg, itraconazole, ketoconazole), benzodiazepines (eg, midazolam, triazolam), buspirone, carbamazepine, cimetidine, cisplatin, doxorubicin, efavirenz, eletriptan, felodipine, fluoxetine, gemfibrozil, HIV protease inhibitors (eg, indinavir, ritonavir), HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors (eg, lovastatin, simvastatin), macrolides (eg, clarithromycin, erythromycin), nefazodone, nevirapine, phenytoin, repaglinide, rifampin, rosiglitazone, sildenafil, or telithromycin. DO NOT START OR STOP any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval. Inform your doctor of any other medical conditions, including a bacterial or viral infection, HIV infection, allergies, pregnancy, or breast-feeding. Tell your doctor if you have a history of heart attack or other heart problems (eg, irregular heartbeat), high or low blood pressure, liver or kidney problems, bone marrow problems, or blood problems (eg, low platelet or neutrophil counts). Tell your doctor if you are undergoing radiation therapy or if you have ever had an allergic reaction to an insect sting. USE OF THIS MEDICINE IS NOT RECOMMENDED if you have a history of extremely low white blood counts (eg, extremely low neutrophil counts), or if you have shingles (herpes zoster) or chickenpox. Contact your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions or concerns about taking this medicine.
SIDE EFFECTS that may occur while using this medicine include cough; diarrhea; general feeling of discomfort; hair loss; mild joint or muscle pain; nausea; numbness, tingling, or burning of your arms, hands, legs, or feet; weakness or tiredness; or vomiting. If they continue or are bothersome, check with your doctor. SOME PATIENTS DEVELOP REDNESS OR SORES IN THE MOUTH OR ON THE LIPS. These symptoms may occur a few days after treatment with this medicine and usually decrease or disappear in 1 week. Talk with your doctor about proper mouth care and other ways to prevent or reduce this side effect. CONTACT YOUR DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY if you experience calf or leg redness, swelling, pain, or tenderness; change in the amount of urine produced; chest pain; discomfort, pain, redness, or swelling at the injection site; fainting; fast, slow, or irregular heartbeat; hearing trouble or loss of hearing; open sores on the skin; pale appearance; red, swollen, blistered, or peeling skin; ringing in the ears; seizures; severe or persistent joint or muscle pain; severe or persistent nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea; severe or persistent numbness, tingling, or burning in the arms, hands, legs, or feet; severe or persistent stomach pain; sudden or severe dizziness, light-headedness, or headache; sudden, unexplained weight gain; swelling of the arms, hands, legs, or feet; symptoms of dehydration (eg, dry mouth or eyes, increased thirst, sluggishness); symptoms of infection (eg, fever, chills, sore throat); symptoms of liver problems (eg, dark urine, pale stools, persistent loss of appetite, yellowing of the skin or eyes); unusual bruising or bleeding; unusual tiredness or weakness; or vision changes (eg, blurred vision). AN ALLERGIC REACTION to this medicine is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include rash; hives; itching; difficulty swallowing or breathing; tightness in the chest; flushing; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, tongue, or throat; or hoarseness. This is not a complete list of all side effects that may occur. If you have questions about side effects, contact your healthcare provider. Call your doctor for medical advice about side effects. You may report side effects to FDA at 1-800-FDA-1088.
If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include burning, numbness, or tingling; redness and/or sores on the mouth or lips; symptoms of infection (eg, fever, chills, persistent sore throat); unusual bruising or bleeding; or unusual tiredness or weakness.
DO NOT SHARE THIS MEDICINE with others for whom it was not prescribed. DO NOT USE THIS MEDICINE for other health conditions. Do not reuse needles, syringes, or other materials. Dispose of properly after use. Ask your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist to explain local regulations for selecting an appropriate container and properly disposing of the container when it is full.
