Perphenazine Information:

Perphenazine is a generic drug that is classified as an antipsychotic. It is used to treat the symptoms of schizophrenia. It is also used to control severe vomiting and nausea in adults. This drug works by reducing excessive excitement in the brain.

Use perphenazine exactly as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.

Take perphenazine tablets by mouth, as prescribed by your doctor.

Do not stop taking perphenazine without consulting your doctor. If you stop taking this drug suddenly, you may experience withdrawal symptoms. If you decide with your doctor to stop taking perphenazine, your doctor will likely gradually decrease your dose of this medication.

Before using perphenazine, tell your doctor if:

 
  • you are allergic to perphenazine

  • You are allergic to other phenothiazines such as chlorpromazine, fluphenazine, prochlorperazine (Compazine), promethazine (Phenergan), thioridazine, or trifluoperazine

  • you are allergic to any other medications

  • you are taking other prescription or nonprescription medications

  • you are taking vitamins or nutritional supplements

  • you are taking any of the following: amiodarone (Cordarone, Pacerone), antidepressants, antihistamines, atropine, barbiturates, bupropion (Aplenzin, Wellbutrin, Zyban); chlorpheniramine (found in cold and cough medications), cimetidine (Tagamet), clomipramine (Anafranil), duloxetine (Cymbalta), epinephrine (Epipen), haloperidol (Haldol), ipratropium (Atrovent), medications for anxiety or mental illness, irritable bowel disease, motion sickness, Parkinson's disease, seizures, ulcers, or urinary problems, methadone (Dolophine)

  • you are taking any of the following: narcotic medications, quinidine, ritonavir (Norvir, in Kaletra), sedatives, certain selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) including fluoxetine (Prozac), paroxetine (Paxil, Pexeva), and sertraline (Zoloft), sleeping pills, or tranquilizers.

  • you have or have ever had brain damage

  • you have any condition that affects your blood cells

  • you have liver disease

  • you have or have ever had breast cancer, depression, seizures, pheochromocytoma (tumor on a small gland near the kidneys), an abnormal electroencephalogram (EEG)

  • you have asthma, emphysema, or a lung infection

  • you have or have had kidney or heart disease

  • you have ever had to stop taking a medication for mental illness due to severe side effects

  • you are experiencing alcohol withdrawal

  • you will be working with organophosphate insecticides

  • if you are pregnant, if you plan to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding

  • if you are having surgery of any kind, tell the doctor that you are taking perphenazine.

Additional precautions:

  • Perphenazine may make you drowsy and it may affect your movements and ability to concentrate. Do not operate machinery or drive a car until you know how this medication affects you.

  • Ask your doctor about the safe use of alcohol while you are taking this medication. Alcohol can make the side effects of perphenazine worse.

  • Perphenazine may cause sensitivity to sunlight. Avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight and wear protective clothing, sunglasses, and sunscreen while taking this medication.

  • Perphenazine may make it more difficult for your body to cool down once it is very hot. Tell your doctor if you plan to exercise vigorously or be exposed to extreme heat for a prolonged amount of time.

  • Perphenazine may cause dizziness, lightheadedness, or fainting when you rise too quickly from lying down, especially when you first start taking this medication. Take care to get up slowly and keep your feet on the ground for a few minutes before standing.

Notify your doctor if you experience any of the following side effects or if they do not go away while you are taking perphenazine:

  • Drowsiness, dizziness, or blurred vision

  • Headache, nausea, vomiting, constipation, or diarrhea

  • Loss of appetite

  • pale skin or change in skin color

  • dry mouth or excessive saliva

  • dilation or narrowing of the pupils

  • loss of appetite

  • blank facial expression, restlessness, or shuffling walk

  • slowed or uncontrollable movements of any part of your body

  • insomnia or unusual dreams

  • paranoia

  • difficult or frequent urination

  • inability to control urination

  • breast enlargement or breast milk production

  • missed menstrual periods

  • decreased sexual ability in men

Contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following side effects:

  • fever or sweating

  • muscle stiffness, neck cramps, or tightness in the throat

  • confusion

  • rapid or irregular heartbeat

  • decreased thirst

  • tongue that sticks out of the mouth or unusual tongue movement

  • Sore throat or difficulty swallowing

  • difficulty breathing

  • uncontrollable face, mouth, or jaw movements

  • eye pain or eye discoloration

  • vision loss

  • seeing everything with a brown tint

  • yellowing of the skin or eyes

  • Rash, hives, or itching

  • seizures

  • swelling of any of the following: eyes, face, tongue, throat, arms, hands, feet, ankles, or lower legs

  • slowed heartbeat

  • fever or chills

If you will be using perphenazine to treat nausea and vomiting, tell your doctor if you experience any of the following symptoms:

  • drowsiness, confusion, or aggression

  • Seizures

  • Headaches

  • problems with vision, hearing, speech, or balance

  • stomach pain or constipation

  • nausea and vomiting experienced along with any of these symptoms may be a sign of something more serious. Notify your doctor immediately if these symptoms occur.

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember it. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue to take the medication as prescribed. Do not take a double dose of perphenazine to make up for a missed dose.  

 

Store this medication at room temperature, away from excess heat and moisture. Keep out of reach of children. Properly dispose of expired medication or medication that is no longer needed.

 

In case of overdose, seek immediate medical attention.

 

Symptoms of overdose may include:

 
  • incoherent response to your surroundings

  • seizures

  • coma
  • rapid or irregular heartbeat

Warnings

 
  • Do not let anyone else take your medication.

  • Perphenazine may interfere with the results of at-home pregnancy tests. Consult with your doctor if you think you might be pregnant.

  • Keep all of your appointments with your doctor while you are on this medication.
