Phenergan Information:
What is Phenergan?
Phenergan (promethazine HCI) is a phenothiazine drug which blocks the naturally occurring compound histamine from affecting the body. Thus it's used to treat allergy symptoms like hives and itching, runny nose, or watery eyes. Phenergan medication can also be used for nausea and vomiting, as a sedative or sleep aid, and as prescribed by the doctor. Additionally, Phenergan VC (promethazine HCl and phenylephrine HCl) is a vasoconstrictor, as well as a decongestant. The treatment of asthma or lower respiratory tract infections (e.g., pneumonia) are not among the recommended Phenergan drug uses, and it should not be taken for such.
How do I take Phenergan?
Your dose is going to be determined by your doctor according to your age, weight, medical history, and what is being treated. In cases of anaphylactic shock, Phenergan medication can be administered as a shot or via IV. For less urgent allergy treatment, take 1 Phenergan pill every 4 hours as required, or take 1 Phenergan pill before meals and before bed. A larger dose may be prescribed for 1 time daily. The rectal suppository can be used in the same way.
For sedation, 1 pill, a parenteral injection, or 1 suppository may be administered. For motion sickness, 1 pill or 1 suppository may be taken 60 minutes prior to travel, as well as 1 time every 12 hours afterward.
The Phenergen gel is used for vomiting, especially with children, to avoid the potential trauma of inserting a suppository or the amount of time it would take to receive an injection from a medical professional. Additionally, pills may be vomited up instead of digested, whereas Phenergen gel is topical.
Before taking Phenergan, tell your doctor if:
- You are taking any other prescribed or over-the-counter medications, drugs, vitamins, or supplements, especially sleeping pills, sedatives, antidepressants, or cold and allergy medication, as this may exacerbate side effects or increase the risks of overdose.
- You have had a poor reaction to other phenothiazine medications.
- You have any medical allergies, especially to antipsychotics (e.g., fluphenazine, perphenazine, prochlorperazine, thioridazine, trifluperazine), neuroleptics (e.g., mesoridazine), or tranquilizers (e.g., chlorpromazine).
- You are allergic to sulfite.
- You have a breathing disorder such as COPD, asthma, or sleep apnea.
- You have or have a history of heart disease or disorders, including high blood pressure.
- You have or have a history of liver disease or disorders.
- You have or have a history of pheochromocytoma (i.e., adrenal gland tumor).
- You are hypocalcemic.
- You have HIV/AIDS or have an otherwise weak or impaired immune system (e.g., bone marrow depression).
- You have or have a history of having seizures.
- You have problems urinating, especially if due to an enlarged prostate.
- You have any gastrointestinal problems, especially stomach blockage or ulcers.
- You are pregnant or breastfeeding, or you plan to become pregnant or to breastfeed.
- Your occupation or other regular responsibilities mean you must be exposed to sunlight.
