Phenobarbital Information:

What is phenobarbital?

Phenobarbital is in a group of drugs called barbiturates and works by slowing the activity of the brain and nervous system in both humans and animals.  Used to treat or prevent seizures, it is also effective when used as a short-term treatment for insomnia or as a sedative before surgery. Phenobarbital is a nonselective central nervous system depressant, which is currently used in developed countries most often as a sedative and as an anticonvulsant, and is capable of producing all levels of CNS mood alteration from excitation to mild sedation, hypnosis and deep coma. Phenobarbital is also an effective treatment in animals. Most often the first choice for seizure suppression, phenobarbital for dogs is effective and safe when used responsibly and, because it is usually a life-long treatment, periodical blood tests are recommended to monitor its effects. Phenobarbital is available in doses of 15mg, 16.2mg, 30mg, 32.4mg, 60mg, 64.8mg, 97.2mg, and 100mg.

How do I take phenobarbital?

You can save money on your phenobarbital costs by purchasing your medications at your local pharmacy using our free phenobarbital coupons or discount card. Phenobarbital is available in regular tablet form and as an elixir, both of which are taken by mouth. Phenobarbital is typically taken one to three times per day. You should take your medicines precisely as prescribed by your physician and ask either your physician or your pharmacist to explain any part of the instructions that you do not understand. If you have taken phenobarbital over a long period of time, you may notice that it is no longer as effective. Tell your doctors if your symptoms are no longer as well-controlled as they were when you first began taking phenobarbital. Do not take larger doses, take it more often, or take it for a longer time than prescribed by your doctor, as phenobarbital can be habit-forming. Also, do not suddenly cease taking your phenobarbital medication, as you may experience significant withdrawal symptoms such as anxiety, muscle twitching, uncontrollable shaking, weakness, dizziness, changes in your vision, nausea, vomiting, seizures, confusion, difficulty falling asleep or staying awake, or fainting. You should take phenobarbital by mouth with a full glass of water. If taking phenobarbital results in an upset stomach, take your medication with food or milk. If you are taking the liquid form, measure the dose carefully using the special measuring device or cup provided by your doctor or pharmacists—do not use a household spoon as you will not likely receive the proper dose.

Specific dosage will be dependent upon numerous factors, including your age, weight and your other health conditions and will be determined by your doctor. The dosage in children will most likely be based on weight. Your doctor may provide a low starting dose and increase the levels as your body adjusts to the medication in order to prevent side effects, such as drowsiness or dizziness. Phenobarbital works best when taken at the same time each day.

Before taking phenobarbital, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to phenobarbital or other barbiturates.
  • You are taking any other prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins, nutritional supplements or herbal products.
  • You are taking anticoagulants (blood thinners).
  • You are taking hormone replacement therapy.
  • You are taking medications for anxiety, depression, pain, asthma, colds, allergies, seizure medications, or other steroids.
  • You have ever had porphyria.
  • You have heart problems.
  • You have hyperthyroidism.
  • You drink or have ever drunk large amounts of alcohol, used street drugs, or have ever abused prescription medications.
  • You are currently experiencing pain or have any condition which causes you regular pain.
  • You have ever considered harming or killing yourself or if you have ever considered harming or killing someone else.
  • You have ever had depression.
  • You have any condition that affects your adrenal gland.
  • You have kidney or liver disease.
  • You have COPD or other breathing disorder.
  • You are pregnant or are trying to become pregnant, or you are breastfeeding.

What are the possible side effects of taking phenobarbital?

If, after taking phenobarbital, you experience discomfort or have questions about your body’s reaction, you should contact your doctor. You should also contact your doctor if any of the following symptoms are severe or do not go away after your body’s adjustment period: drowsiness, headache, dizziness, excitement, increased activity (especially in children), nausea, vomiting, restless muscle movements in your eyes, tongue, jaw, or neck; a fever or a sore throat; sores in your mouth; easy bruising or bleeding; or broken blood vessels under your skin.

Other phenobarbital side effects, which can be serious, should be immediately reported to your healthcare provider: slowed breathing or difficulty breathing, swelling of the eyes, lips, or cheeks, rash, blistering or peeling skin, fever or confusion.

When using phenobarbital for dogs, some side effects include excessive thirst, excessive urination, and excessive appetite. If your pet experiences these side effects, they generally will not subside when your dog’s body adjusts to the medication. If the effects are severe enough, your veterinarian may change the medication.

What if I forget to take a dose of phenobarbital?

If you are taking phenobarbital to prevent seizures and you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. Do not double-dose to catch up.

How do I store phenobarbital?

Store phenobarbital in a child-proof container at room temperature in a cool, dry place. Keep this medication out of reach of children and pets and do not let anyone else take your medication.

What happens if I overdose on phenobarbital?

If you have overdosed on phenobarbital, you should contact your poison control center or emergency room immediately. US residents can call their local poison control center at 1-800-222-1222. Symptoms of overdose may include: uncontrollable movements of the eyes, loss of coordination, drowsiness, slowed breathing, drop in body temperature and blisters. If the patient is unconscious, call 911 for immediate medical treatment.

Warnings

Do not suddenly stop taking this medication without first checking with your doctor. Stopping this medicine can result in withdrawal symptoms, including vomiting, sweating and dizziness. Phenobarbital side effects may also cause your eyes to become more sensitive to light, and wearing sunglasses may ease the discomfort. Because phenobarbital may cause some people to become dizzy, it is best to know how this medication will affect you before you drive a car or operate machinery which requires concentration.  Phenobarbital may also result in dry mouth, which can be temporarily relieved by using sugarless gum, candy, or ice chips. If your mouth continues to feel dry, contact your doctor or dentist as the continued dryness may result in dental disease.

When using phenobarbital with children, monitoring their body temperature, particularly in hot weather, is important because the medicine can result in a rapid increase in body temperature. Older patients have a higher likelihood of experiencing confusion or memory loss, constipation, drowsiness, nervousness or irritability.

Phenobarbital may be habit forming and should be used only by the person it was prescribed for. Never share phenobarbital with another person, especially someone with a history of drug abuse or addiction.
