Plan B Information:
What is Plan B?
Plan B is a common brand name version of levonorgestrel, an emergency form of birth control used to prevent pregnancy for up to 72 hours after unprotected sex. This medication contains a progestin hormone that stops ovulation and makes it more difficult for an egg to be fertilized and implanted in the wall of the uterus. It is more effective the sooner it is taken after unprotected sex.
How do I take Plan B?
Get a Plan B coupon from HelpRx to reduce the price in your pharmacy. Take Plan B by mouth as soon as possible after unprotected sex. Follow the instructions on your medication and talk to your pharmacist if you have questions. In some cases, you may be instructed to take two tablets at once, while in other cases, you may be instructed to take one tablet and wait 12 hours to take the second. Contact your doctor if you throw up within 2 hours of taking this medication, as you may need to take another dose.
Before taking Plan B, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to this medication or any other progestins
- You are taking any other prescription or non-prescription medications
- You have recently experienced unexplained vaginal bleeding
- You are pregnant or suspect you may be pregnant
- You have diabetes
- You have a history of migraine headaches
What are the possible side effects of taking Plan B?
Some women may experience headache, fatigue, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, changes in vaginal bleeding, diarrhea, or breast tenderness after taking this medication. These side effects do not usually last long, but if they persist or worsen, tell your doctor. Inform your doctor immediately if you experience lower abdominal pain after taking this drug.
What happens if I forget to take a dose of Plan B?
Plan B should only be used as an emergency contraceptive, not a regular form of birth control; therefore, it is unlikely that you will forget to take a dose. However, if you get this prescription drug and forget to take your Plan B pills, contact your doctor and ask what to do. The missed dose instructions will depend on how long it has been since you had unprotected sex.
How do I store Plan B?
Because it is an emergency contraceptive, it is unlikely that you will need to store Plan B for an extended period of time. If you do need to store Plan B pills, keep them in a tightly sealed container at room temperature (between 68 and 77 degrees). Do not store your medication in the bathroom, as light and moisture can negatively affect it. Always store prescription drugs out of reach of pets and children.
What happens if I overdose on Plan B?
Overdosing on Plan B is rare; however, when overdoses do occur, they can be quite serious and may lead to severe nausea and vomiting. If you or someone in your household has overdosed on this drug, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222.
Warnings
Plan B may cause dizziness, so you should not drive or operate heavy machinery until you know how the medication affects you. Limit alcohol consumption after taking this medication. If you have diabetes, talk to your doctor about the risk factors of taking this drug, as Plan B may make it more difficult to manage your blood sugar levels.
Brand Name
Plan B is the most well-known brand name form of levornorgestrel. Other emergency contraceptives that contain levornorgestrel include Fallback Solo, Opcicon, and Next Choice. Some of these medications may be available over-the-counter at a low dosage; talk to your doctor to see if this is the right choice for you. If your doctor decides that you should take this medication, remember to print or download a free HelpRx coupon so that you can get a Plan B discount of up to 75% off the price.
