Prednisolone Information:

What is prednisolone?

Prednisolone is a steroid derived from cortisol which prevents the body’s release of substances that result in swelling or inflammation and is useful for the treatment of a wide range of inflammatory and auto-immune conditions, such as Crohn’s disease, Bell’s palsy, multiple sclerosis, vasculitis, acute lymphoblastic leukemia, systemic lupus erythematosus and Kawasaki disease. Prednisolone is also effective as steroidal eye drops to treat swelling, redness, itching and allergic reactions which affect the eye. It may also be used treat allergies and asthma. Prednisolone is available in tablet form, as an oral solution or as a syrup in doses of 5mg/5ml or 15mg/5ml. It may also come in a cream for topical treatment.

How do I take prednisolone?

You can save money on your prednisolone costs by purchasing your medications at your local pharmacy using our free prednisolone coupon or discount card. The liquid form of prednisolone is taken by mouth, and the dose should be measured using the special dose-measuring spoon provided by your doctor or pharmacists. Do not use a household table spoon to measure your dose, as you will likely not receive the proper amount of medication. If you do not have a dose-measuring device, ask your pharmacist to provide one.

Your doctor’s determination of your dosage will be different than for other patients and is determined based on your condition, the number of doses you take per day, the time between your dose, the length of time you have been taking prednisolone and your overall health. If you have any questions on the effects of the medicine or how to properly take this medicine, ask your doctor or pharmacist. You should take prednisolone with food or milk to avoid stomach irritation. If you are taking your prednisolone once per day, you should take it in the morning. Do not take it more often than directed. Do not suddenly stop taking prednisolone without first discussing it with your doctor.

Before taking prednisolone, tell your doctor if:

  • You have Cushing’s syndrome.
  • You have diabetes.
  • You have glaucoma or cataracts.
  • You have heart problems or heart disease.
  • You have high blood pressure.
  • You have hyperglycemia.
  • You have hypertension.
  • You have a bacterial, virus or fungal infection, including infections such as measles, tuberculosis, chickenpox or herpes.
  • You have kidney or liver disease.
  • You have mental problems.
  • You have osteoporosis.
  • You have seizures.
  • You are prone to mood changes.
  • You have a stomach ulcer or intestinal disease such as diverticulitis or colitis.
  • You have a thyroid problem.
  • You have a history of malaria.
  • You have had an allergic reaction to foods, other medications, dyes or preservatives.
  • You are pregnant or are trying to become pregnant, or you are breastfeeding.

What are the possible side effects of taking prednisolone?

The following is a list of possible side effects from taking prednisolone. This list is not all-inclusive and any concerns you may have after taking prednisolone should be discussed with your healthcare provider. While some of these symptoms may subside as your body adjusts to the prednisolone medicine, others may be serious and should be discussed with your doctor: aggression, agitation, anxiety, blurred vision, sleep problems, acne or dry skin, slow wound healing, nausea or bloating, stomach pain, dizziness, irregular heartbeat or pulse, headache, irritability, depression, mood changes, nervousness, pounding in the ears or weight gain.

More serious side effects include hives, difficult breathing and swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat. You should contact your doctor immediately if you experience problems with your vision, swelling, rapid weight gain, shortness of breath, unusual thoughts or behavior, seizure (convulsions), bloody or tarry stools, coughing up blood, leg discomfort, muscle weakness or limp feeling or dangerously high blood pressure which can include a severe headache, blurred vision, buzzing in your ears, anxiety, confusion, chest pain, shortness of breath, uneven heartbeats or seizure.

What if I forget to take a dose of prednisolone?

If you miss a dose of prednisolone, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your regular dosing schedule. Do not double dose.

How do I store prednisolone?

Storage of prednisolone will depend on which form of the medication you have been prescribed. Most of the time this medication will need to be stored at a temperature between 68 and 77 degrees Fahrenheit and kept in a dry place away from children and pets.

What happens if I overdose on prednisolone?

Overdosing on prednisolone will not likely cause life-threatening results. However, if you believe you may have overdosed, you should report your concerns to your doctor.

Warnings

Extended, long-term use of prednisolone can cause thinning skin, thinning of the bones, bruising, changes in the shape or location of body fat, increased acne or facial hair, menstrual problems, and impotence. You should discuss these symptoms with your doctor if they occur.

Prednisolone may impact your immune system, causing you to get more infections than usual. You should avoid sick or infectious people and wash your hands often. If you are exposed to chickenpox or measles or experience any signs of infection including chills or fever, tell your doctor right away. If you are administering prednisolone to your child, and you believe your child is not growing properly, report this immediately to your healthcare provider. Ensure that you, or your child if your child is taking prednisolone, do not receive a live vaccine while using this medication, as the vaccine may not work as well and may not protect against disease. Prednisolone medicine can pass through your breast milk and may harm your nursing baby. Tell your doctor if you are or plan to breastfeed, as steroids can affect growth in children.
