Prepopik Information:

What is Prepopik?

Prepopik is a medication that combines the stimulant laxatives sodium picosulfate with magnesium oxide and anhydrous citric acid (these mix to create the osmotic laxative magnesium citrate) in order to stimulate emptying of the bowels in those who will undergo a colonoscopy. The purpose of taking Prepopik is to allow the physician to have a clear view of the intestinal wall during the procedure. The medication facilitates this by creating a watery diarrhea. Those without a Prepopik copay card can download a Prepopik discount coupon from the HelpRx website and receive a substantial discount when purchasing this medication at most US pharmacies.

How do I take Prepopik?

Prepopik comes as a powder that is mixed with 150ml (five ounces) of water and is taken orally. It is administered on a split dose basis, with the first taken the night before the colonoscopy and the second taken on the morning of the procedure. The first dose may also be prescribed to be taken in the late afternoon of the day before, with the second one being consumed approximately six hours later. The doctor will determine the better regimen, based on the patient’s profile. Follow the doctor’s instructions as to the quantities of clear liquids that must be consumed between the times the Prepopik is first taken and the colonoscopy. If you are taking other medications, do so at least one hour before taking Prepopik, or according to the instructions of your physician.

Before taking Prepopik, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to sodium picosulfate, magnesium oxide, anhydrous oxide, magnesium citrate, or any of the ingredients in the Prepopik medication
  • You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or nursing a child
  • You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins, or supplements
  • You are taking ARBs, NSAIDs, or carbamazepine

  • You are taking diuretics, steroids, tetracycline, penicillamine, or SSRIs
  • You are taking digoxin, fluoroquinolone antibiotics, or chlorpromazine,
  • You are taking antibiotics, or medications for depression, seizures, or mental illness
  • You are taking medications to treat kidney disease
  • You have, or have had, a stomach blockage or an opening in the intestinal wall
  • You have, or have had heart disease, arrhythmia or tachycardia,  inflammatory bowel disease, or ulcerative colitis
  • You have, or have had, kidney disease, toxic megacolon, or any condition that prevents emptying of the stomach

What are the possible side effects of taking Prepopik?

If any of these symptoms appear, contact Emergency Services at 911.
