Protopic Information:
What is Protopic?
Protopic contains an immunosuppressive prescription drug called tacrolimus. It is used in a topical form to treat atopic dermatitis or eczema. The way Protopic works to stop eczema breakouts is not fully understood, but we know that is it reduces interleukin, a substance produced by T-cells as a response of the immune system. This response results in inflammation and other unwanted side effects. Because most dermatitis is thought to be caused by an allergic reaction and allergies are caused by hypersensitivity of the immune system, Protopic is a logical choice for treating most atopic dermatitis breakouts that cannot be managed with steroids.
How do I take Protopic?
Use a Protopic savings card or a coupon from HelpRx to reduce the price in your pharmacy. Wash and dry your hands before applying Protopic. Make sure the affected area is dry. Then apply a thin layer of the ointment over the affected area. Gently rub it in to your skin. Wash your hands after using the ointment; however, if the affected area is on your hands, do not wash the treated areas. You may cover your skin with clothing after use, but do not cover the area with bandages, wraps, or anything tight-fitting. If you are using any moisturizers, apply them after you have applied Protopic and allowed it to soak in. This ointment is usually applied twice daily, but follow directions given to you by your doctor or pharmacist. This medication has not been approved for long-term use, and may result in adverse effects if used beyond the recommended period. Do not use this ointment for longer periods of time than what is recommended by your doctor. Avoid exposure to sunlight and sunlamps while using Protopic.
Before taking Protopic, tell your doctor if:
- You think you might be allergic to any of the ingredients in this medication.
- You have a skin infection or virus, or you think that your eczema rash has become infected.
- You are using any other ointments or skincare products on the affected area.
- You are pregnant or breastfeeding.
- You are using prescription or nonprescription drugs, especially antifungals, antibiotics, calcium channel blockers like verapamil, and any other ointments or creams.
- You have ever had kidney disease or skin cancer.
- You have a weakened or compromised immune system.
What are the possible side effects of taking Protopic?
Possible side effects from using Protopic include redness, acne, headache, sensitivity to hot or cold, and mild burning, stinging, and itching at the site of application. More serious side effects include severe stinging, itching or burning, swollen lymph nodes, crusting, and any signs of infection. Report any serious side effects to your doctor at once.
What if I forget to take a dose of Protopic?
If you forget to apply a dose of Protopic, apply the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it’s almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue on your regular schedule. Do not apply extra ointment to compensate for a missed dose.
How do I store Protopic?
Store Protopic tightly closed in a safe place where it is out of reach of children and pets. Keep this medication at a temperature between 59 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit.
What happens if I overdose on Protopic?
Overdose is not possible with this topical medication. Excessive use could result in exaggerated side effects. Report serious side effects to your doctor immediately. If someone accidently ingests Protopic, call the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222.
Warnings
Protopic has not been approved for long-term use. If you condition hasn’t improved within six weeks, see your doctor. A few patients who used Protopic developed skin cancer or lymphoma. It is still not certain if this was a direct effect from the medication. Stay out of the sunlight and avoid any form of ultraviolet light while treating your skin with Protopic.
