Provigil Information:
What is Provigil?
Provigil (modafinil) is a racemic compound and a wakefulness-promoting agent that works by changing certain neurotransmitters in the brain involved with controlling wakefulness and sleepiness. It is used primarily to treat SWD (shift work disorder) or narcolepsy. It may also be prescribed for treating obstructive sleep apnea/hypopnea syndrome in coordination with a CPAP machine.
How do I take Provigil?
Always follow your doctor's instructions as well as those included with your Provigil. This drug may be habit forming, so you must always follow your doctor's instructions explicitly.
This medication is a tablet intended to be taken by mouth, either with or without food. Most often, it is prescribed as 1 200mg pill daily, however, when you need to take your medication will be determined by what is being treated. For some, it is the beginning of the day. For others, it's 1 hour before a work shift.
Always keep this medication at room temperature and away from excess moisture or heat (e.g., a bathroom).
Before taking Provigil, tell your doctor if:
- You have had allergic reactions or severe side effects to Nuvigil (armodafinil).
- You have a history of addiction or substance abuse, as this medication may be habit forming.
- You have or have a history of kidney or liver disease or disorder.
- You have or have a history of heart problems or disease, including angina, mitral valve prolapse, a recent heart attack, or a blood pressure problem that requires medication.
- You commonly get rashes or sunburns, or you have a skin problem or disorder that affects your skin.
- You currently need a CPAP machine.
- You have a history of addiction or substance abuse, or you are actively addicted to a substance, including alcohol.
- You are taking any other prescribed or over-the-counter drugs, medications, supplements, or vitamins, including but not limited to sedatives, antifungals, antidepressants, MAOIs, anticonvulsants, antibiotics, beta blockers, or immunosuppressants.
- You are pregnant or breastfeeding or plan to become pregnant or to breastfeed.
What are the possible side effects of taking Provigil?
Some Provigil drug side effects are severe and require immediate medical attention. If you experience any of the following, discontinue your medication and seek emergency aid: skin rash (even mild ones), unusual thoughts or behavior, hallucinations, new depression or anxiety, unusual aggression, numbness or severe tingling, hives or itching, difficulty breathing, chest pain or uneven heartbeats, easy bruising or bleeding, muscle weakness, swelling in the face or lips, swelling in the tongue or throat, sores in the mouth, fever with sore throat.
Common side effects include: insomnia, headache or dizziness, dry mouth, nausea or diarrhea, or feeling unusually nervous or agitated. These Provigil side effects do not need medical attention unless they persist or get worse.
What if I forget to take a dose of Provigil?
Talk to your doctor about what to do if you miss a dose of this medication. Often, you can take this medication as soon as you remember it, unless it is near the time you need to sleep. Never take extra Provigil to make up for a missed dose.
How do I store Provigil?
Store Provigil in its original container at a temperature between 68 and 77 degrees Fahrenheit. Keep this medication out of reach of children and pets and do not share it with anyone else.
What happens if I overdose on Provigil?
Symptoms may include: nausea or diarrhea, confusion, unusual agitation or excitement, or trouble sleeping. If you suspect a Provigil drug overdose, seek emergency medical assistance or call your local poison control center.
Warnings
This medication is not intended for anyone under the age of 16 years. It should also be used with caution in the elderly.
Avoid alcoholic beverages while taking this medication. Provigil may alter your thinking or reactions. Do not perform potentially hazardous activities (e.g., driving) until you know how you'll react to this medication.
Stop taking this medication and call your doctor as soon as possible if you have a rash, even if it is only a mild rash. It may be an indication of a more severe reaction.
This medication is usually prescribed for 12 weeks, although it may be prescribed for a shorter period of time. Do not stop taking it sooner or later than instructed by your doctor, even if you feel well rested. Provigil may be habit forming. Do not take larger doses than prescribed, and contact your doctor if you feel you are developing an unhealthy dependence.
Talk to your doctor immediately if you start or continue to feel excessively sleepy while taking Provigil.
