What is Requip XL?

Requip XL contains extended-release ropinirole, which is a dopamine agonist drug. Symptoms of Parkinson’s disease are thought to be caused by a lack of dopamine, and Requip XL works by stimulating dopamine receptors to make up for the lack of dopamine. Ropinirole is also used to treat restless leg syndrome, which is also thought to be caused by a lack of dopamine. However, the extended release version not normally prescribed for RLS because the symptoms only occur at night.

How do I take Requip XL?

Requip XL tablets should not be crushed, chewed or broken. This will ruin the extended release mechanisms. These tablets should be swallowed whole. This medication can be taken with or without food, but those with sensitive stomachs may wish to take it with food. Patients are normally started out on a dose of 2mg per day, and then the dose size is slowly increased until symptoms are effectively controlled. Always follow your doctor’s dosing instructions.

What if I forget to take a dose of Requip XL?

If you forget to take a dose of Requip XL, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. However, if it’s already almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue on your normal regimen. Do not take double doses to compensate for missed ones.

How do I store Requip XL?

Store Requip XL tablets at a temperature between 59 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit. Protect the medication from light and moisture, and keep it out of reach of children and pets.

What happens if I overdose on Requip XL?

Signs of overdose on Requip XL may include vomiting, hallucinations, palpitations, dizziness, nightmares, somnolence, confusion and chest pain. If you think you or someone else has overdosed on Requip XL, call the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If symptoms are severe, or the victim is unresponsive, seek medical attention at once.

Warnings

Do not drive or operate machinery while taking this medication. Requip XL has been known to cause sudden onset of sleep in the middle of the day. Alcohol can increase this side effect. Get up slowly from a reclining position to reduce dizziness.
