Risperidone Information:
What is risperidone?
Risperidone is the generic name for a second-generation atypical antipsychotic drug which belongs to the chemical class of benzisoxazole derivatives. It is a dopamine antagonist and works by changing the effects of chemicals which naturally occur in the brain. Risperidone uses include treating schizophrenia symptoms of patients over 13 years of age, treating episodes of mania, or treating mixed episodes in patients at least 10 years of age who suffer from bipolar disorder. Risperidone uses also include treating behavioral concerns including aggression, self-injury, mood changes, as well as the communication, social, and behavioral symptoms associated with autism. The risperidone medication belongs to a group of medicines referred to as atypical antipsychotics and works by changing activity of some of the natural substances that exist in the brain.
Approved by the FDA in 1993, risperidone is believed to interfere with the communication among the brain’s nerves, which communicate with each other by making and releasing the chemicals called neurotransmitters that attach to receptors on other nerves. Risperidone blocks some of the receptors, including dopamine type 2, serotonin type 2, and alpha 2 adrenergic receptors.

If you are taking the liquid form, measure the dosage with the dosage syringe provided only. Do not use a spoon or other measuring cup. If you do not have a dosage syringe, your pharmacist will provide one. Do not mix liquid risperidone with cola or tea.
