Solia Information:

What is Solia?

Solia is an oral contraceptive that combines ethinyl estradiol (estrogen) and desogestrel (progestin) to halt ovulation and alter cervical mucus and the uterine lining in order to prevent pregnancy. This medication is also prescribed to women who have PDD (premenstrual dysphoric disorder) or who need help controlling acne.

How do I take Solia?

Solia is dispensed in 28-tablet packets with one pill taken orally with water on a daily basis; the first twenty-one pills are active and the other seven are reminder pills. The pills may be taken with food or milk to prevent nausea. The first pill is taken on the first day of the menstrual cycle or on the Sunday immediately following, with each subsequent tablet taken in its proper order. Once the tablets have been exhausted (including the reminder pills) a new packet is started.  For those who have never used an oral contraceptive, an alternative means of birth control for the first seven days is needed. Notify your doctor before you stop using this contraceptive.

Before taking Solia, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to ethinyl estradiol, desogestrel, estrogen, progestin, or any of the ingredients in the Solia pills
  • You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child
  • You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins, or supplements
  • You are taking, nefazodone, cholestyramine, cimetidine, atorvastatin, clofibrate, verapamil, temazepam, sulfasalazine, pyrimethamine, diltiazem, or cyclosporine

  • You have, or have had, blood clots or clotting problems
  • You have, or have had, diabetes or kidney or liver disease

What are the possible side effects of taking Solia?

Some individuals have reported side effects after taking Solia. Mild side effects include tender or swollen breasts, changes to the menstrual cycle, weight gain or loss, vaginal itching, a vaginal discharge, problems with wearing contact lenses, or changes in skin color. If any of these conditions persist or worsen, contact your healthcare provider.

Severe side effects requiring immediate medical attention include symptoms of an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing or swallowing; rash, hives, itching, fever; swelling of the face, mouth, lips, throat, or tongue), breast lumps, unusually heavy periods, vision problems, changes in the frequency or severity of migraines, disorientation, speech difficulties, severe headaches, severe vomiting, loss of balance, bulging eyes, intense chest pain or chest heaviness, darkened urine, depression, severe mood changes, dizziness, fainting, extreme tiredness or weakness, leg pain, changes in stool color, appetite loss, menstrual bleeding lasing longer than seven days, severe stomach pain, speech difficulties, swollen extremities, symptoms of jaundice,  blood clots, unusual bleeding, coughing blood, weakening or numbing in an arm or leg.

What if I forget to take a dose of Solia?

If you forget to take Solia, follow the instructions that accompanied your prescription or contact your physician about to what to do. Missing a daily pill puts you at risk of becoming pregnant; an alternative form of birth control should be used for seven to ten days after the missed dose or until the end of the pill cycle. Do not make any changes to the dosing regimen without your doctor’s approval.

How do I store Solia?

Keep Solia tightly sealed in its blister pack, out of the reach of the reach of children and away from extremes of temperature and humidity. Do not remove a pill until you are ready to take it. Dispose of any unused or expired doses according to the instructions of your pharmacist.

What happens if I overdose on Solia?

If an overdose of Solia is suspected, contact the Poison Control center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has stopped breathing or lost consciousness, contact Emergency Services at 911. Signs of an overdose include severe nausea or severe or unusual vaginal bleeding.

Warnings
