Sprintec Information:

What is Sprintec?

Sprintec is a hormonal contraceptive that contains norgestimate (progestin) and ethinyl estradiol (estrogen). Each pack contains 21 active pills and 7 inactive pills that don’t contain hormones, but are to be used as reminder pills. Sprintec works to prevent pregnancy by thickening cervical mucous to make it more difficult for sperm to enter the uterus, stopping ovulation and changing the endometrial lining to prevent the implantation of a fertilized egg.

How do I take Sprintec?

Sprintec should be taken once per day at the same time every day. The more you strictly adhere to the schedule, the more effective your birth control will be. A pack of Sprintec may be started on the first Sunday following your period or on the first day of your period. Depending on when you start your birth control and whether or not you were taking a hormonal contraceptive before, you may have to use back-up contraception for 7 days. Your doctor will tell you what to do. Take one pill per day until you finish the pack, then start a new one. You should get your period while you are taking the last 7 pills in the pack.

Before taking Sprintec, tell your doctor if:

  • You regularly smoke cigarettes.
  • You have a history of liver disease or you have ever had jaundice.
  • You are diabetic.
  • You get migraine headaches.
  • You have high blood pressure or high cholesterol.
  • You have a clotting disorder, or you’ve ever had a blood clot.
  • You are experiencing abnormal vaginal bleeding.
  • You have ever had breast cancer or any type of cancer of the reproductive system.
  • You have depression or bipolar disorder.
  • You have heart disease or coronary artery disease.
  • You have ever had a stroke or heart attack.
  • It’s possible that you could be pregnant, or you are breastfeeding.
  • You are taking any other prescription or nonprescription drugs, vitamins or herbal supplements, including antibiotics, antivirals, HIV medications, St. John’s wort, antidepressants, medications or supplements with hormones and blood thinners.
  • You are allergic to any of the ingredient in Sprintec pills.

What are the possible side effects of taking Sprintec?

Possible drug side effects of Sprintec include nausea, breast tenderness, dizziness, headache, darkening of patches of skin, changes in weight and changes in discharge. If any of these side effects are severe or don’t go away, tell your doctor or gynecologist. Serious but rare side effects that you should report immediately include jaundice, depression, migraines, abdominal pain, heavy vaginal bleeding, confusion, slurred speech, weakness or numbness on one side of the body, swelling in the groin or calf areas and chest pain.

What if I forget to take a dose of Sprintec?

If you miss a Sprintec pill, take the missed pill as soon as you remember. If you miss two Sprintec pills, take two pills the day you remember and two pills the following day and then continue on your regular schedule. You should use back-up contraception for 7 days. If you miss more than two pills, call your doctor and ask him or her what to do.

How do I store Sprintec?

Store Sprintec in a place where you will easily remember to take it at the same time every day. Keep the pills out of direct light and store them at a temperature between 59 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit.

What happens if I overdose on Sprintec?

There are no reports of serious adverse effects from Sprintec overdose. Signs of overdose may include spotting, nausea and vomiting. If someone has accidentally ingested a large amount of Sprintec pills, call the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222.
