Thiothixene Information:

Thiothixene is in the typical antipsychotic drug class. It helps reduce schizophrenia symptoms such as delusions and hallucinations. It works by blocking the activity of the chemical dopamine in the brain.

Follow your doctor’s instructions for taking thiothixene and make sure you are taking the correct dose. Your doctor may occasionally change your dose to deliver the most effective treatment. Keep taking your medication as directed even if you don’t notice immediate improvements; it may take a while for thiothixene to achieve its full effect.

Before taking thiothixene, tell your doctor if:

·       You are allergic to this or any other medications

·       You are taking any other prescription or over-the-counter drugs

·       You have a dementia-related condition

·       You have a seizure disorder

·       You have heart disease

·       You have had breast cancer

·       You have had low white blood cell counts

·       You have a history of alcoholism

·       You are breastfeeding, pregnant, or planning a pregnancy

Stop taking thiothixene and call your doctor right away if you experience any serious side effects, including jaundice, dark-colored urine, severe constipation, severe lightheadedness, muscle stiffness, high fever, irregular heart rate, tremors, sudden weakness, mouth or skin sores, easy bruising or bleeding, difficulty breathing or swallowing, seizure, or uncontrollable movements of your face, arms, or legs. Mild side effects only need medical attention if they persist or become severe. The most common side effects include weight changes, swollen hands or feet, dry mouth, drowsiness, diarrhea, constipation, nausea, and vomiting.

Take the missed dose once you remember, unless it’s almost time for your next dose. In this case, skip the missed one and continue with your regular schedule. Don’t take two doses at once, as this may increase your risk of side effects.

Keep thiothixene in a tightly sealed container out of reach of children and pets. Store it at room temperature away from heat and humidity. If you no longer need this medication or it has expired, ask your pharmacist how to dispose of it.

A drug overdose on thiothixene can be very dangerous and may lead to dizziness, drowsiness, muscle stiffness, difficulty swallowing, weakness, problems with balance or coordination, and loss of consciousness. Get emergency medical help right away if you or someone in your home has overdosed.

Warnings

Thiothixene may cause lightheadedness, so always stand up slowly from a sitting or lying position. Don’t drive or perform other activities that require alertness until you know how the medicine affects you. Don’t drink alcohol while taking thiothixene. This medication may make you more prone to heat stroke, so avoid overexerting yourself in hot weather. This medication may also make you more sensitive to sunlight, so always wear sunscreen or protective clothing when you go outside.

Brand Names
