What is Tranylcypromine?

 

Tranylcypromine a generic monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) that comes in tablet form, and it is used to treat depression in patients for whom other drugs have not been helpful. This drug works by increasing the amounts of brain chemicals that help to elevate mood and maintain a healthy mental balance.

How do I use Tranylcypromine?

 

Tranylcypromine tablets should be taken orally, and this drug is typically prescribed to be taken 2 times per day. Take this medication exactly as directed by your doctor.

 

This drug may become habit-forming or addictive, so be careful to use this medication as instructed by your doctor. Do not take this medication for longer than prescribed, or take more of this medication than was prescribed to you. Contact your doctor if you notice any unusual changes in your mood or behavior while using this medication.

 

It may take as long as 3 weeks or longer to feel the full benefits of using this medication. Do not stop taking this medication without first consulting with your doctor.

Before using Tranylcypromine, tell your doctor if:

 
  • you are allergic to Tranylcypromine or any other medications

  • you are taking any prescription or over-the-counter medications, vitamins, or nutritional or herbal supplements

  • you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or if you are breastfeeding

  • you have or have ever had high blood pressure

  • you have or have ever had frequent or severe headaches

  • you have or have ever had pheochromocytoma, which is a tumor on a small gland near the kidneys

  • you have ever had a stroke or mini-stroke

  • you have or have ever had heart disease, liver disease, or blood vessel disease

  • you use or have ever used street drugs or you have ever overused prescription medications

  • you have or have ever had anxiety or agitation

  • you have or have ever had diabetes or seizures

  • you have or have ever had kidney disease or thyroid disease

 

Additional precautions:

 
  • If you are having surgery or x-ray procedure, tell your doctor you are taking this medication.

  • This medication may cause drowsiness. Do not drive or operate machinery until you know how this medication affects you.

  • Avoid consuming alcohol while using this medication, as alcohol may worsen the drowsiness effect of this medication.

  • This drug may remain in your body for several weeks after you stop using it. Tell your doctor that you recently stopped taking this drug before you start using a new medication.

  • This drug may cause dizziness, lightheadedness, and fainting when you get up too quickly from a reclining position or lying position, especially when you first start using this medication. Take care to rise slowly from a reclining or lying position to minimize the occurrence of these effects.

What are the possible side effects of using Tranylcypromine?

 

Contact your doctor if you experience these symptoms and if they do not go away:

  • drowsiness or weakness

  • dry mouth

  • rash

  • hair loss

  • loss of appetite

  • diarrhea or constipation

  • stomach pain

  • blurred vision

  • chills

  • ringing in the ears

  • tightening of the muscles

  • shaking or tremors

  • numbness, burning, or tingling in the arms or legs

  • difficulty urinating

  • decreased sexual ability

Contact your doctor immediately or seek emergency medical attention if you experience any of these symptoms:

  • headache, nausea, or dizziness

  • slow, fast, or pounding heartbeat

  • chest pain or chest tightness

  • fever, sweating, or flu-like symptoms

  • cold, clammy skin

  • neck stiffness or soreness

  • sensitivity to light

  • wide pupils

  • swelling of arms, hands, feet, ankles, or lower legs

  • unusual bleeding

  • unusual bruising

  • pain in the upper right part of the stomach

  • yellowing of the skin or eyes

What if I forget to use a dose of Tranylcypromine?

 

Take your missed dose of Tranylcypromine as soon as your remember to take it, unless it is almost time for the next dose. If this is the case, skip the missed dose and resume the regular dose schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.

How do I store Tranylcypromine?

 

Store this medication tightly closed when not in use. Store it at room temperature and keep away from excess moisture and heat. Keep this medication out of reach of children and away from pets. Properly dispose of any expired or unnecessary medication.

What happens if I overdose on Tranylcypromine?

 

In case of overdose, call Poison Control (1-800-222-1222) to find out what to do, or seek immediate medical attention.

 

Symptoms of overdose on Tranylcypromine may include:

 
  • insomnia

  • anxiety, agitation, or restlessness

  • confusion

  • unclear speech

  • dizziness

  • weakness

  • drowsiness

  • headache

  • muscle twitching

  • fever

  • stiffness

  • coma

Warnings

 
  • Do not let anyone else use your medication.

  • This drug may cause unexpected changes in your mental health, and it may increase the chance of suicidal thinking. You, your family, or your caregiver should contact your doctor right away if you experience any of the following symptoms while taking this drug:

 
  • new or worsening depression

  • suicidal thoughts, planning, or attempts

  • agitation, irritability, extreme worry, or severe restlessness

  • panic attacks

  • insomnia

  • aggressive behavior

  • frenzied, abnormally excited behavior

  • acting out

  • any other unusual behavior
