Uceris Information:
What is Uceris?
Uceris contains a drug called budesonide which is a corticosteroid. Corticosteroids work by reducing inflammation. Uceris is an extended release medication, meaning it acts more slowly over an extended period of time. Uceris is active in the colon where it is needed most and reduces inflammation in the area which results in a decrease in symptoms. Uceris may be prescribed to stop symptoms of ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn’s disease or to prevent symptoms from returning.
How do I take Uceris?
Uceris is normally taken once daily in the mornings with or without food. The usual dosage is 9mg and the course of treatment is normally 8 weeks. Follow your doctors dosing instructions because they may vary by patient. Uceris pills should not be crushed or chewed. They should only be swallowed whole. Breaking them can ruin the extended-release mechanism.
Before taking Uceris, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to any of the ingredients in Uceris tablets.
- You are pregnant or breastfeeding.
- You have diabetes or glaucoma.
- You have high blood pressure.
- You or anyone in your family has cataracts or glaucoma.
- You or anyone in your family has tuberculosis.
- You or anyone in your family has osteoporosis.
- You have stomach ulcers.
- You have liver disease.
- You have never had chicken pox or measles, or you haven’t been vaccinated against these infections.
- You are taking other prescription or nonprescription medications or you are taking herbal supplements, especially antibiotics, antifungals, antivirals or any other steroid medications.
What are the possible side effects of taking Uceris?
Possible Uceris drug side effects include headache, dizziness, nausea, indigestion, abdominal pain, back pain, fatigue, runny nose, vomiting, and coughing. If any of these side effects are severe, report them to your doctor. Other more serious side effects include fever, rash, itching, changes in vision, swelling of the face or neck, signs of infection, difficulty breathing, easily bruising or bleeding and acne. Report serious or unusual side effects to your doctor immediately.
What if I forget to take a dose of Uceris?
If you miss a dose of Uceris, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it’s close to the time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue on your regular regimen. Do not take a double dose of Uceris to compensate for a missed one.
How do I store Uceris?
Keep Uceris tightly closed in the container provided to you by the pharmacy. Protect this medication from light and moisture and keep it out of reach of children and pets.
What happens if I overdose on Uceris?
Overuse of Uceris for an extended period of time can result in thin skin that bruises easily, infections, slow healing of cuts and injuries, stretch marks, acne, weight gain and deposits of fatty tissue. If you think you are taking too much of this medication, talk to your doctor. If someone accidentally swallows a large amount of Uceris pills, call the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222.
Warnings
Taking corticosteroids on a regular basis can make your body less able to fight infections. Try to stay away from sick people while taking Uceris, and tell your doctor if you develop signs of an infection.
