Xeljanz Information:
What is Xeljanz?
Xeljanz is a type of drug known as a Janus kinase inhibitor. It helps treat rheumatoid arthritis pain and is believed to work by disrupting the signals that lead to inflammation in cells. Because Xeljanz is very expensive and may cause serious side effects, it is not typically a first line of defense for RA; most doctors will not prescribe it unless a patient has already tried methotrexate and did not experience symptom relief with that medication.
How do I take Xeljanz?
Take this drug with or without food, and follow your doctor’s dosage instructions carefully; your dose of Xeljanz will depend on your condition and response to treatment. Keep all doctor’s appointments while using this drug; your doctor may need to run frequent liver function and blood tests.
Before taking Xeljanz, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to this or any other medications
- You are taking any other prescription or non-prescription drugs or supplements
- You currently have any kind of viral, fungal, or bacterial infection
- You have had shingles
- You have kidney or liver disease, or you have had a kidney transplant
- You have diabetes
- You have HIV/AIDS or another condition that causes a weakened immune system
- You have a personal or family history of skin cancer
- You have ever had any serious stomach problems, including ulcers or esophagus perforation
- You are breastfeeding, pregnant, or trying to become pregnant
What are the possible side effects of taking Xeljanz?
The most common Xeljanz side effects are headache, diarrhea, and cold-like symptoms (such as nasal congestion and sore throat). In rare cases, Xeljanz may cause serious liver function problems; tell your doctor immediately if you notice any of the following warning signs: severe upper stomach pain, unusual fatigue, clay-colored stool, dark urine, or jaundice. Stop taking Xeljanz and contact your doctor immediately if you have any of the following signs of a serious infection: fever, excessive sweating, painful urination, changes in bowel movements, weight loss, flu-like symptoms, acute chest pain, shortness of breath, coughing with mucus or blood, skin swelling, or skin redness.
What if I forget to take a dose of Xeljanz?
Take the missed dose immediately if you remember it shortly after the time you normally take it. If it is almost time for your next scheduled dose when you remember, skip the missed dose and get back to your normal dosage schedule. Do not take more medicine than you normally would for a single dose.
How do I store Xeljanz?
Store the Xeljanz drug at room temperature, away from bright light and moisture. As with all prescription medications, keep it away from areas that children or pets could easily reach. If you no longer need your medication or it has expired, ask your pharmacist how to safely dispose of it.
What happens if I overdose on Xeljanz?
If you think that you or someone in your household has overdosed on this medication, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 immediately.
Warnings
Because Xeljanz can weaken your immune system, you should avoid getting a live vaccine or coming into contact with someone who has recently received this type of vaccine. You should also avoid grapefruit products, as grapefruit can interact with Xeljanz and cause certain unwanted side effects.
