Zovia Information:

What is Zovia?

Zovia contains two female hormones: ethinyl estradiol (an estrogen) and ethynodiol diacetate (a progestin). These hormones help prevent pregnancy by stopping the release of an egg from the ovaries, causing cervical mucus to become thicker to block sperm from reaching an egg, and making it more difficult for a fertilized egg to attach to the uterine lining. When used correctly, this medication has a failure rate of less than 1%.

How do I take Zovia?

Take one Zovia pill per day at the same time every day, going in the order the pills appear in the packet. If you are just starting this oral contraceptive, take the first pill in the packet on the first day of your period or the first Sunday after your period starts. Always refill your prescription before it runs out so that you do not miss any doses.

Before taking Zovia, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to this or any other medications
  • You are taking any other prescription or non-prescription drugs or supplements
  • You have a history of heart attack, stroke, or blood clots
  • You have a history of hormone-related cancer or an abnormal mammogram
  • You have unexplained vaginal bleeding
  • You have severe migraines
  • You have liver disease or a history of jaundice when using oral contraceptives
  • You have pancreatitis or gallbladder problems
  • You have any uterine problems
  • You have high blood pressure or high cholesterol
  • You have epilepsy
  • You have diabetes
  • You have a history of depression
  • You will be having surgery or will be on bed rest
  • You are a heavy smoker
  • You are breastfeeding or think you might be pregnant

What are the possible side effects of Zovia?

Zovia usually doesn’t cause serious side effects. However, you may experience an upset stomach, irregular bleeding, breast tenderness, headache, or bloating, especially during the first several months you are using this medication. Most side effects will go away as your body adjusts to the medication, but if you have any that persist or become severe, tell your doctor. You should also tell your doctor if you have chest pain, leg pain or swelling, breast lumps, vision changes, coughing with blood, dark urine or clay-colored stools, missed periods, numbness on one side of the body, shortness of breath, unusual vaginal irritation, jaundice, swollen fingers or ankles, fever, or severe dizziness or fainting. These are not all the possible side effects, and you should always consult your doctor if you have a condition that concerns you.

What if I forget to take a dose of Zovia?

If you miss one active pill (one of the pills in the first three rows of the packet), take it as soon as you remember, even if that means taking two pills in the same day. If you miss two active pills in the first or second row of the packet, take two pills for the next two days so that you get back to your regular schedule. If you miss two pills in the third row or more than three of any of the active pills, throw out the rest of the pack and start a new pack, and use a backup method of birth control (such as condoms) for at least a week. If you miss your period two months in a row, contact your doctor for a pregnancy test.

How do I store Zovia?

Store Zovia at room temperature, away from bright light and humidity. Do not remove a pill from its original packaging until you are ready to take it. Do not leave your medication anywhere that children or pets could reach it.

What happens if I overdose on Zovia?

Overdosing on Zovia may lead to nausea, vomiting, or abnormal vaginal bleeding. If you believe that you or someone in your household has overdosed on this birth control drug, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 right away.

Warnings

Because dizziness and vision changes are possible side effects of Zovia, you should not drive or engage in other activities that require clear vision until you know how the medication affects you. Limit your alcohol consumption, since alcohol can exacerbate certain side effects. Zovia may make your skin more sensitive to sunlight, so wear sunscreen or protective clothing when you need to be in the sun for an extended period of time. Do not smoke while using Zovia, as this can increase your risk for blood clots and other serious complications. Keep in mind that while Zovia will help prevent pregnancy, it will not stop the spread of sexually transmitted diseases.

Brand Names

Zovia and Kelnor are two generic forms of brand name Demulen. Talk to your doctor to determine which oral contraceptive is best for you, and use HelpRx to get a coupon for Zovia and any medication that isn’t covered by your insurance.
