Aciphex Information:

What is Aciphex?

Aciphex, or rabeprazole in its generic form, is a proton pump inhibitor medication used to control acid reflux from GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) and heal duodenal ulcers. Proton pump inhibitors work by blocking the enzyme system that leads to the secretion of gastric acid in the stomach. The lack of acid eliminates the pain of indigestion and heartburn, and also allows for the healing of ulcers.

How do I take Aciphex?

Use an Aciphex savings card or print Aciphex coupons from HelpRx to reduce the price when you fill your prescription in your pharmacy. Aciphex comes as a tablet to be taken orally. Depending on whether you are treating GERD or ulcers, your treatment period could be from 7 weeks to 2 months. You may also be prescribed maintenance therapy after treatment is complete. Follow your health professional’s instructions provided for your particular condition. This medication is usually taken once or twice daily after a meal. Do not crush, chew, or break Aciphex tablets. They should be swallowed whole. Your doctor may prescribe antibiotics along with this medication to help heal ulcers. Most ulcers are healed within four weeks of treatment.

Before taking Aciphex , tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to rabeprazole or any other acid-reducing medications.
  • Your heartburn has lasted 3 months or longer or you have experienced any of the following symptoms: chest or shoulder pain, shortness of breath or wheezing, pain that extends to your arms, neck, or shoulders, sweating, or dizziness, diarrhea sudden weight loss, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, pain when you swallow food, or black or bloody stools.
  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • You have osteoporosis or you are over the age of 50.
  • You have liver disease.
  • You are taking prescription or nonprescription medications, vitamins, or supplements including other drugs for acid reflux/GERD, blood thinners, diuretics, iron supplements, antibiotics, Rilpivrine and other HIV drugs, ketoconazole, methotrexate and other cancer drugs, medications for autoimmune problems, and theophylline.
  • You have or have ever had a low level of magnesium or potassium in your blood.

What are the possible side effects of taking Aciphex?

Side effects from taking Aciphex include: headache, diarrhea, stomach upset, dizziness, nausea, diarrhea, and constipation. If you experience dizziness, confusion, elevated heart rate, jerky movements, muscle cramps, weakness, seizure, or a choking sensation, contact your doctor at once. You may have low magnesium levels.

Those who take Aciphex or other proton pump inhibitors for an extended amount of time may develop a weakened stomach lining. They are also at higher risk for bone fracture such as fracturing the hips, wrists, or spine. Long-term use of Aciphex and similar drugs poses a risk of developing nutritional deficiencies and food allergies.

What if I forget to take a dose of Aciphex?

If you forget to take a dose of Aciphex, take the missed dose as soon as you remember it. If it’s almost time for you next dose, skip the missed dose and continue on your regular schedule. Do not take double dose of Aciphex to make up for a missed one.

How do I store Aciphex?

Store Aciphex in an airtight container or original packaging at a room temperature between 59 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit. Protect your medication from moisture.

What happens if I overdose on Aciphex?

Overdose on Aciphex is not common and haven’t been any reports of large overdoses. Signs of excessive use of proton-pump inhibitors include vomiting, sweating and flushing, headache, dry mouth, blurred vision, rapid heartbeat, and confusion. If you think you or someone you know has overdosed on Aciphex, contact the poison control center at 1-800-222-1222.

Warnings

Talk to your doctor about the risks of long-term use of Aciphex, especially if your family has a history of osteoporosis and you are over the age of 50. The long-term absence of stomach acid can cause unexpected nutritional and gastrointestinal problems.
