What is Nexium?

Nexium is a highly effective proton pump inhibitor drug used to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), otherwise known as acid reflux. It is also used to treat or prevent ulcers, indigestion, and other gastroesophageal and gastrointestinal conditions. Proton pump inhibitors like Nexium work by irreversibly inhibiting the parietal cells in the stomach from secreting gastric acid. This is the final step in gastric acid production, and by blocking the final step in the production process, Nexium is able to reduce gastric acid by up to 99%. This lack of stomach acid eliminates the pain of indigestion and heartburn, and also allows for the healing of ulcers.

How do I take Nexium?

This medication is usually taken once a day one hour before a meal. To treat some conditions, this medication may be taken twice a day. Follow instructions given to you by your doctor. Do not crush, chew, or break the extended release capsules to avoid an excessive dose of medication. You may, however, carefully open the capsules and spill the contents onto a soft food such as applesauce. Do not chew the contents of the capsule. Swallow it whole.

Before taking Nexium, tell your doctor if:
• You are allergic to esomeprazole or any of the other ingredients in Nexium. Also tell your doctor if you are allergic to other antacids.
• You have a history of low magnesium levels.
• You have ever had liver disease.
• You are taking prescription or nonprescription drugs, vitamins, or supplements, especially antibiotics, antacids, blood thinners, antifungals, Valium, digoxin, diuretics, iron supplements, HIV medications, and methotrexate.
• You are pregnant or breast-feeding.
• Side Effects
What are the possible side effects of taking Nexium?
 
Side effects from taking Nexium include headache, flatulence, decreased appetite, dry mouth, abdominal pain, diarrhea, drowsiness, and constipation. If you have symptoms of low magnesium such as an elevated or irregular heartbeat, jerking muscles, shakiness or jittery feeling, muscle cramps, confusion, vertigo, or confusion, stop taking Nexium and call your doctor immediately. These are not all the possible side effects from taking Nexium. If you experience any severe or unusual side effects, contact your doctor at once.

What if I forget to take a dose of Nexium?
