Ambien Cr Information:
What is Ambien CR?
Ambien CR is the brand name for the sedative zolpidem, a non-barbiturate hypnotic medication. It is a central nervous depressant, and is used in the treatment of insomnia. Although each case differs, Ambien CR is usually prescribed for short-term use (one or two days), but not for longer than two weeks. The outer coating of the medication dissolves quickly to induce sleepiness; the remainder of the medication is released slowly through the night to help sustain sleep.
How do I take Ambien CR?
Ambien CR is administered in tablet form and taken orally, just before bead, with or without water. Do not chew, split, or crush the tablet. Although this medication is taken on an as needed basis, at least seven or eight hours of uninterrupted sleep time must be available before taking Ambien CR; plan to go to bed immediately after taking this medication.
Before taking Ambien CR, tell your doctor if:
- You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child
- You are allergic to zolpidem or any of the ingredients in the Ambien CR tablet
- You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins, or supplements
- You are taking anti-depressants, anti-seizure medications, sedatives, or anti-anxiety medications
- You are taking ketoconazole, rifampin, itraconazole, or pain medications
- You drink alcohol, and the frequency of consumption
- You are planning surgery or dental surgery
- You have, or have had, depression, mental illness, or seizures
- You have sleep apnea or snoring problems
- You have bronchitis, emphysema, asthma, or other breathing difficulties or diseases
- You have myasthenia gravis, kidney disease, or liver disease
What are the possible side effects of taking Ambien CR?
Some patients have reported side effects after taking Ambien CR, some more severe than others. Less severe side effects include gastrointestinal problems (gas, heartburn, diarrhea, constipation, or stomach pain or tenderness); appetite changes, balance problems, dizziness, or lightheadedness; sleepiness, a feeling of being drugged; dry mouth or throat; red eyes, headache, pain in the back, joints, or neck; muscle cramps or pain; burning, itching, numbing or pain in the limbs or extremities; heavy menstrual bleeding; tinnitus, tremors, or unusual dreams. If any of these conditions persist or worsen, contact your healthcare provider.
Severe side effects requiring immediate medical attention include signs of an allergic reaction (rash, hives, itching, swelling of the eyes, face, lips, tongue, or throat, or difficulty breathing or swallowing), hoarseness, shortness of breath, nausea, vomiting, rapid or pounding heartbeat, chest pain, vision problems, or participating in activities while not fully awake and then failing to recall them.
What if I forget to take a dose of Ambien CR?
Ambien CR is taken on an as needed basis, so missing a dose is not likely. However, if it is later than the time you normally take this medication, a tablet can be administered so long as the allowable sleep time is available. Do not take a dose if the minimum sleep requirements cannot be met. Never take more than the recommended dosage.
How do I store Ambien CR?
Keep Ambien CR tightly sealed in its original packaging, out of the reach of children and away from the extremes of temperature and humidity. Dispose of any unused or expired tablets according to the instructions of your pharmacist.
What happens if I overdose on Ambien CR?
If an overdose of Ambien CR is suspected, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has collapsed or stopped breathing, contact Emergency Services at 911. Symptoms of an overdose include coma, slowed heartbeat or breathing, or drowsiness.
Warnings
Tell your doctor if you become pregnant while taking Ambien CR. Do not drink alcohol or use drugs while taking this medication. Do not stop taking this medication without your doctor’s permission. Do not drive, operate heavy machinery or equipment, use power tools, or use firearms unless you are fully awake and at least four hours have passed since taking Ambien CR. Taking this medication may result in the individual participating in activities and behaviors while sleeping, yet not be able to recollect them. Ambien CR may cause changes to behavior or mental health. Contact your doctor if you become unusually aggressive, have visual or aural hallucinations, out-of-body feelings, memory or concentration problems, or symptoms of depression or thoughts of suicide.
