Belsomra Information:
What is Belsomra?
Belsomra is a unique type of anti-insomnia medication that works by acting on orexin receptors. Orexin is a neurotransmitter that was just discovered in 1998. Orexin is produced in the hypothalamus and seems to play a major role in appetite and stimulating wakefulness. By inhibiting Orexin, Belsomra is able to induce and help maintain sleep in those having problems with insomnia.
How do I take Belsomra?
Belsomra comes in the form of a tablet and should be taken no more than once daily. Take this medication only before going to bed and only when you have at least 7 hours to sleep. This medication works better if it is not taken after eating.
Before taking Belsomra, tell your doctor if:
- You are taking other prescription or nonprescription drugs, especially antidepressants, antifungal medications, antibiotics, anticonvulsants, aprepitant, HIV medications, anxiety or other medications for mental illness, sedatives and others.
- You are taking vitamins or herbal supplements.
- You have narcolepsy or cataplexy.
- You are pregnant or breastfeeding.
- You are allergic to any of the ingredients in Belsomra.
- You have lung problems or trouble breathing.
- You have liver disease.
- You have a history of alcohol addiction or you drink alcohol every day.
What are the possible side effects of taking Belsomra?
Possible side effects from taking Belsomra include daytime sleepiness, clouded thinking, sleep walking, feeling confused or acting strangely, mood changes, doing activities in your sleep, unusual dreams, diarrhea, dry mouth, cough and dizziness. If you experience mood changes, paralysis when falling sleep or waking up or leg weakness during the night, tell your doctor at once. Report any severe side effects or activities you find you do in your sleep to your doctor.
What if I forget to take a dose of Belsomra?
Belsomra should only be taken before bed. If you forget to take your medication, and you have less than seven hours to sleep, skip this dose and take Belsomra 30 minutes before the next time you go to bed.
How do I store Belsomra?
Store Belsomra tightly closed in its container at a temperature between 59 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit. Keep this medication away from moisture and light, and always keep it out of reach of children and pets.
What happens if I overdose on Belsomra?
There is not much information available for Belsomra overdose. Signs of overdose may include extreme drowsiness. If you think you or someone you know has overdosed, call the Poison Control Center immediately at 1-800-222-1222. If the victim is unconscious or unresponsive, call 911.
Warnings
Belsomra has caused people to do things while they were partially asleep that they did not remember doing later such as driving, eating, making phone calls and other activities. If you experience this side effect, tell your doctor immediately. Ask your doctor about eating grapefruit or drinking grapefruit juice while taking Belsomra. Do not drink alcohol and do not drive or operate machinery or do any potentially dangerous activities when taking Belsomra.
