Augmentin Information:

What is Augmentin?

Augmentin is a combination medication including amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium (a beta-lactamase inhibitor), and is an oral antibiotic. It is derived from penicillin, making it an analog of ampicillin.  While Augmentin uses are only the treatment of diseases causes by bacteria, Augmentin ES-600 is specifically for pediatric patients with certain recurring illnesses. The addition of clavulanate potassium is to assist in fighting antibiotic resistant bacteria.

How do I take Augmentin?

Depending on what your doctor is treating, your age and weight, and your medical history, your doctor will determine your dose. For Augmentin XR and Augmentin ES-600, doses are taken 2 times daily at 12 hour increments. Never crush, chew, or break your XR capsules; always swallow them whole with a full glass (8ox) of water. The ES-600 is a powder for oral suspension; mix as instructed by your doctor or pharmacist, and measure your doses using a medicine dosing cup or spoon.

Augmentin standard release or chewable immediate release medicine may be taken 2 times daily 12 hours apart, or up to 3 times daily 8 hours apart. Do not chew or break your standard pills. Chewable pills must be chewed completely before swallowing.  Take both with a full glass (8oz) of water.

Always take your medicine at the same time every day in order for it to be the most effective. To avoid stomach upset, you may take this medication at the beginning of a meal. Do not stop taking your Augmentin before intended, even if you feel better. It will increase your risk of getting sick again, or developing antibiotic-resistant illnesses.

Before taking Augmentin, tell your doctor if:

  • You have had a poor reaction to this medication before, especially with the liver.
  • You are allergic to penicillin or any penicillin-based medications.
  • You are allergic to cephalosporin antibiotics.
  • You have a history of jaundice or hepatitis.
  • You have or have a history of kidney or liver disease or problems.
  • You have or have had mononucleosis.
  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding, or plan to become pregnant or breastfeed.
  • You are taking birth control pills, especially if it's hormone-based.
  • You have phenylketonuria (PKU).
  • You are currently taking or have recently taken other antibiotics.
  • You are taking any other prescription or over-the-counter medication, drugs, vitamins, or supplements, especially blood thinners, allopurinol, or probenecid.

What are the possible side effects of taking Augmentin?

Severe Augmentin side effects include: unusual thoughts or behavior, unusual agitation, confusion, seizure, fever, unusual muscle weakness or tingling, difficulty breathing, hives or itching, sore or swollen throat, swelling in your face or tongue, a burning sensation in your eyes, pale or yellow skin, skin pain or tingling, unusual bruising or bleeding (especially red or purple pinpoints under the skin), a purple rash that has blistering and peeling, loss of appetite, stomach pain, upper stomach pain or nausea, dark urine, clay colored stool, diarrhea that is watery or bloody . If you experience any of these symptoms, seek medical assistance immediately.

Common Augmentin side effects don't require medical attention unless they persist or worsen. These include: headache, sores around or inside your mouth, skin rash with itching, mild nausea or vomiting, mild diarrhea, mild stomach pain or discomfort from gas, vaginal itching or discharge from a yeast infection.

What if I forget to take a dose of Augmentin?

Take your dose as soon as you remember it, unless it's time for your next dose. If so, then you must skip the missed dose.

Do your best to not forget your dosing schedule -- missed doses increases the risk of remaining ill or developing antibiotic-resistant illness.

How do I store Augmentin?

Store pill forms of this medication away from heat and moisture (e.g., a bathroom). The liquid form should be stored in the fridge, and any remaining liquid after you've taken your complete course of antibiotics should be discarded.

What happens if I overdose on Augmentin?

Symptoms of Augmentin overdose include: mental or physical hyperactivity, drowsiness, skin rash, stomach pain, nausea and vomiting, diarrhea. If you experience any of these symptoms, call your local poison control center or get immediate medical assistance.

Warnings

The different dosages or types of Augmentin medicine are not interchangeable. Only take the exact medication your doctor has currently prescribed to you.

Augmentin may cause lab tests to yield false results. Always inform lab personnel that you're taking it.

Diarrhea can be a side effect of this medication; however, it can also be indicative of new or worsening illness. Never take anti-diarrheal medicines unless instructed to do so by your doctor. If there is blood in your stool, or it's watery diarrhea, call your doctor immediately.

This medication will make birth control less effective, so use back up birth control or non-hormone birth control while taking it.
