What is Bactroban?

Bactroban is the drug mupirocin, a topical antibiotic used to treat impetigo and other bacterial skin infections. It is not for use with viral or fungal infections. It works by killing bacteria to stop its spread.

How do I take Bactroban?

Bactroban is a topical medicine that is applied to the skin, typically three times a day for seven to fourteen days. Before using, wash and dry the affected the area then apply a small amount, rubbing gently to create a thin film. A dressing to cover the area may be applied. Wash hands after use. Do not apply Bactroban to burns without a doctor’s permission. If your condition has not cleared up once the treatment period is concluded, contact your doctor.

Before taking Bactroban, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to this mupirocin or any of the ingredients in the Bactroban medicine
  • You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child
  • You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins, or supplements.

What are the possible side effects of taking Bactroban?

Some people have reported side effects after applying Bactroban. Less severe symptoms include a mild rash, burning, stinging, pain, or itching at the application site. However, if any of these conditions persist or worsen, contact your doctor.

Severe side effects requiring immediate medical attention include signs of an allergic reaction (rash, hives, itching, peeling or blistered skin; swelling of the face, mouth, lips, throat, or tongue; difficulty breathing or swallowing).

What if I forget to take a dose of Bactroban?

If you forget to apply a dose of your Bactroban medicine, do so as soon as your remember and are able. However, if it is almost time for the next scheduled dose, skip the one missed and resume the regular schedule. Do not increase dosage or change the regimen to make up for one that was missed.

How do I store Bactroban?

Keep Bactroban tightly sealed in its original container, out of the reach of the reach of children and away from extremes of temperature and humidity. Do not allow the ointment to freeze. Dispose of any unused medication according to the instructions of your pharmacist. 

What happens if I overdose on Bactroban?

Bactroban is for topical use only. However, if it is accidentally ingested contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has stopped breathing or lost consciousness, contact Emergency Services at 911.

Warnings

Bactroban is for topical external use only. Do not allow this medication to come in contact with the eyes. Do not apply to burns without a doctor’s permission.
