• What
This medicine is an interferon used to treat certain types of multiple sclerosis (MS). It may also be used to treat other conditions as determined by your doctor.
• How
Follow the directions for using this medicine provided by your doctor. This medicine comes with a MEDICATION GUIDE approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. It also comes with an additional patient leaflet with detailed instructions for use. Read them carefully each time you refill this medicine. Ask your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist any questions that you may have about this medicine. IF YOU ARE USING THIS MEDICINE AT HOME, a healthcare professional will provide detailed instructions for its appropriate use. Ask any questions you may have about your medicine or giving injections. This medicine is for injection into a muscle. Use the proper technique taught to you by your doctor. Remove this medicine from the refrigerator and allow it to warm to room temperature (about 30 minutes) before you use a dose. DO NOT USE hot water or other heat sources to warm the medicine faster. If the medicine contains particles, is cloudy or discolored, or if the pen or syringe is cracked or damaged in any way, do not use it. Never touch the needle of the syringe with your fingers. Throw away any medicine left in the syringe after you use your dose. BE SURE to rotate your injection site with each injection to avoid an injection site reaction. Do not inject this medicine into an area where the skin is irritated, reddened, bruised, infected, or scarred. STORE THIS MEDICINE in the refrigerator between 36 and 46 degrees F (2 and 8 degrees C), away from light. Do not freeze. If refrigeration is not available, this medicine can be stored at or below 77 degrees F (25 degrees C) for up to 7 days. Protect from light. If this medicine has been stored improperly, discard and do not use it. KEEP THIS PRODUCT, as well as syringes and needles, out of the reach of children and away from pets. Use this medicine regularly to receive the most benefit from it. Using this medicine on the same day each week will help you to remember. IF YOU MISS A DOSE OF THIS MEDICINE, use it as soon as possible, then go back to your regular dosing schedule the following week. Do not use 2 doses at once. Do not use this medicine 2 days in a row. If you accidentally use this medicine 2 days in a row or use more than your prescribed dose, contact your doctor right away.
• Precautions
Some medicines or medical conditions may interact with this medicine. INFORM YOUR DOCTOR OR PHARMACIST of all prescription and over-the-counter medicine that you are taking. ADDITIONAL MONITORING OF YOUR DOSE OR CONDITION may be needed if you are taking telbivudine or medicine that may harm the liver (eg, acetaminophen, methotrexate, ketoconazole, isoniazid, certain medicines for HIV infection). Ask your doctor if you are unsure if any of your medicines might harm the liver. DO NOT START OR STOP any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval. Inform your doctor of any other medical conditions, including a history of mood or mental problems (eg, depression), suicidal thoughts or behaviors, alcohol abuse or dependence, liver problems or abnormal liver function tests, an autoimmune disease (eg, psoriasis, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis), bleeding problems, blood clots, low blood cell counts (eg, red or white blood cells, platelets), heart problems (eg, heart failure), seizures, thyroid problems, allergies, pregnancy, or breast-feeding. Tell your doctor if you drink alcohol. Contact your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions or concerns about taking this medicine.
• Side Effects
SIDE EFFECTS that may occur while using this medicine include dizziness; flu-like symptoms (eg, headache, tiredness, mild fever or chills, muscle aches, weakness); joint pain; mild stomach pain; or nausea. If they continue or are bothersome, check with your doctor. THIS MEDICINE MAY CAUSE an injection site reaction, such as pain, redness, swelling, or tenderness. Check your injection site 2 hours after you use this medicine. If you have a skin reaction and it does not go away in a few days, contact your doctor or nurse. MENTAL OR MOOD PROBLEMS (eg, depression) and suicidal thoughts or behaviors have been reported in patients taking this medicine. Contact your doctor right away if you experience new or worsening mental or mood problems (eg, aggression, anxiety, depression, hallucinations, irritability, nervousness) or suicidal thoughts or behaviors. CONTACT YOUR DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY if you experience change in vision; chest, jaw, or arm pain; confusion; dark, tarry, or bloody stools; fainting; fast or irregular heartbeat; seizures; severe or persistent dizziness or light-headedness; severe or persistent pain, redness, swelling, or tenderness at the injection site; shortness of breath; sudden, unexplained weight gain; swelling of the hands, ankles, legs, or feet; symptoms of infection (eg, fever; chills; persistent sore throat; painful, burning, or increased urination; bloody diarrhea; coughing up mucus); symptoms of liver problems (eg, dark urine; loss of appetite; pale stools; severe stomach pain; unusual nausea, drowsiness, or tiredness; yellowing of the eyes or skin); symptoms of thyroid problems (eg, trouble concentrating, feeling cold or hot all the time, weight changes, skin changes); unusual bruising or bleeding; or unusual tiredness or weakness. AN ALLERGIC REACTION to this medicine is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of an allergic reaction may include rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, throat, or tongue; mouth sores; or blistered or peeling skin. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist. This is not a complete list of all side effects that may occur. • Overdose
If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.
• Additional Info
DO NOT SHARE THIS MEDICINE with others for whom it was not prescribed. DO NOT USE THIS MEDICINE for other health conditions. Do not reuse needles, syringes, or other materials. Dispose of properly after use. Ask your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist to explain local regulations for selecting an appropriate container and properly disposing of the container when it is full. IF USING THIS MEDICINE FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME, obtain refills before your supply runs out. CHECK WITH YOUR PHARMACIST about how to dispose of unused medicine.
