Axiron Information:
What is Axiron?
Axiron is the only under-arm testosterone medication available. Axiron is prescribed to treat hypogonadism, or the underproduction of the testosterone hormone in adult males. It has not been approved for women or children under 18. Signs of low testosterone levels include decreased libido, hair loss, fatigue, erectile dysfunction, decreased strength, depression, and a loss of bone density. Axiron contains testosterone that is absorbed by the skin and circulated throughout the body. Normal testosterone levels are usually reached after 14 days of use.
How do I take Axiron?
Buy Axiron at your local pharmacy with a coupon from HelpRx. Axiron is applied topically at the same time every day. Follow your doctor’s dosing instructions. In most cases, two pumps of the solution are applied each morning. Before using Axiron for the first time, you must prime the pump by pressing it down three times. Discard any of this liquid in the sink and rinse it down the drain. The pump only needs to be primed once. To apply Axiron, make sure the skin under the arms is clean and dry. Any deodorant should be applied prior to using Axiron. Then fully depress the pump to release 30mg of the solution into the applicator cup. Hold the applicator upright and press it up and down into the armpit to apply the solution. If the solution drips, catch it in the applicator cup and reapply. Do not rub the solution in with your fingers. If you have been prescribed another dose of Axiron, repeat the same steps on the opposite armpit. Rinse the applicator and dry it with a tissue after each use. Avoid swimming or bathing for at least two hours after applying Axiron. Do not apply this product to any other part of the body other than the armpits. If any solution gets on your hands or fingers, wash it off with soap and water.
Before taking Axiron, tell your doctor if:
- You have a history of breast or prostate cancer.
- You have BPH or an enlarged prostate.
- You have kidney, liver, or heart disease.
- You have sleep apnea or breathing problems.
- You have hypercalcemia or diabetes.
- You are taking other prescription or nonprescription medications, vitamins, or supplements, especially blood thinners, insulin, corticosteroids, and any other hormone therapies or remedies.
What are the possible side effects of taking Axiron?
Possible side effects from using Axiron include acne, and irritation at the site of application. Serious but uncommon side effects include difficulty urinating, a frequent urge to urinate, blood in urine, a negative change in mood, swelling in the arms or legs, unusual flushing and sweating. Report any unusual or serious side effects to your doctor at once.
What if I forget to apply a dose of Axiron?
If you miss a dose of Axiron, apply the missed dose as soon as you remember it. If it’s almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue on your regular schedule. Do not apply double doses.
How do I store Axiron?
Store Axiron at a room temperature between 59 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit and keep it in a safe place out of reach of children and pets. When disposing of the Axiron bottle and applicator, make sure the disposed product isn’t accessible to pets or small children that may be able to take it from the trash.
What happens if I overdose on Axiron?
There have been no reported overdoses of Axiron. Excessive use could result in increased side effects. If you think you have used too much Axiron, talk to your doctor. If someone else accidently uses or ingests Axiron, contact a doctor at once or call the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222.
