Boostrix Information:
What is Boostrix?
Boostrix is a vaccine used to prevent patients from getting tetanus (lockjaw), diphtheria, and pertussis (whooping cough). It protects against these serious bacterial diseases by exposing the body to a very small amount of bacteria, which causes the immune system to produce antibodies to fight the bacteria off.
How do I take Boostrix?
Boostrix will be administered by a healthcare professional. It is injected into a muscle, usually in the upper arm.
Before taking Boostrix, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to this or any other vaccines, or you have had a severe reaction after receiving a similar vaccine
- You have received a tetanus shot within the last 5 years
- You have had seizures
- You have a weakened immune system
- You have a fever or any type of infection
- You have a neurologic disorder, such as Guillain-Barre syndrome
- You have a bleeding disorder
- You are breastfeeding, pregnant, or trying to become pregnant
What are the possible side effects of taking Boostrix?
Some people experience mild irritation, including swelling, tenderness, and redness, at the site where Boostrix was injected. Other common side effects include mild nausea, joint pain, chills, headache, nausea, diarrhea, and vomiting. Contact your doctor if you have any mild side effects that become severe, or if you have any of the following within a week of your injection: a high fever, severe drowsiness, or seizures. The likelihood that you experience any of these serious side effects is very low.
What if I forget to take a dose of Boostrix?
Because Boostrix is administered once by a healthcare provider, you will not need to worry about forgetting a dose.
How do I store Boostrix?
You should not need to store Boostrix in your home. If you do need to store the medication for any reason, keep it in the refrigerator, out of reach of children and pets.
What happens if I overdose on Boostrix?
Since Boostrix is administered as a single dose, an overdose is highly unlikely.
Warnings
It may not be safe to get a Boostrix vaccination if you have a compromised immune system. It’s fine to receive a scheduled vaccination if you have a minor cold, but you should reschedule your appointment if you have a fever or any type of infection. If you have received Boostrix before and are getting a booster dose, let your doctor know if the previous shot caused any side effects.
Brand Names
Boostrix is a brand name vaccination and does not have a generic equivalent. The only other tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis vaccine available in the US is Adacel. Your doctor should recommend an immunization schedule for you and your child.
