Butrans Information:
What is Butrans?
Butrans is the brand name of the analgesic medication buprenorphine, and is administered through a transdermal patch. It is classified as an opioid agonist and a Schedule III narcotic. It is effective because it changes the way the central nervous system and the brain perceive and respond to pain. For those without a Butrans copay card, controlling the Butrans cost can be readily accomplished by using the Butrans coupon found on the HelpRx website.
How do I take Butrans?
Because Butrans is a transdermal patch, it is applied directly to the skin. Select an area free from body hair, and wash and dry the section thoroughly. Remove the patch from the protective packaging, placing it in the targeted area and gently press it into place. Wash hands thoroughly after applying the patch. If the adhesive does not stick, the edges (and only the edges) of the patch can be taped down. Because the patch has an effective range of seven days, replace older patches at the interval prescribed by your doctor.
Before taking Butrans, tell your doctor if:
- You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child. If you become pregnant while taking Butrans, contact your healthcare provider immediately
- You are allergic to buprenorphine or any medications
- You are allergic to glues or adhesives
- You are taking any medications, vitamins, or supplements
- You are taking anticholinergics, medications for tachycardia or arrhythmia, seizure medications, benzodiazepines, muscle relaxants, opioids, or other pain medications
- You have asthma, COPD, or other lung diseases or breathing problems
- You have, or have had, heart failure, a stroke, a brain tumor, biliary tract disease, low blood pressure, low potassium levels, or problems urinating
- You have, or have had, heart, liver, kidney, or thyroid disease
What are the possible side effects of taking Butrans?
Some of those who have used the Butrans patch have reported side effects. Less severe problems include gastro-intestinal issues such as diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, or constipation. Dizziness, irritation at the application site, dry mouth, headache, or stomach pain have also been reported. If any of these problems persist or worsen, contact your physician.
Severe side effects that require immediate medical attention include breathing difficulties, chest pain, tachycardia, chest pain, and signs of an allergic reactions including a rash or hives, or swelling of the lips, mouth, tongue, or throat.
What if I forget to take a dose of Butrans?
If you forget to apply your Butrans patch, or replace an existing one, do so as soon as you remember. Remove an existing patch first and do not wear more than one at a time without medical permission.
How do I store Butrans?
Keep Butrans patches at room temperature in a safe location, away from the extremes of heat, cold, and humidity and out of the reach of children. Dispose of any outdated or unused patches according to the directives of your pharmacist. The manufacturer has a Patch Disposal Unit available if requested.
What happens if I overdose on Butrans?
In the event of an overdose of Butrans, contact Poison Control immediately at 1-800-222-1222. If the patient has stopped breathing or has collapsed, call 911 to contact Emergency Services. Common signs of an overdose include constricted pupils, slowed breathing, extreme drowsiness, slurred speech, or coma.
Warnings
Extended use of Butrans can lead to dependence or addiction. Contact your physician if you become pregnant while using the patch. Butrans may cause lightheadedness or dizziness when rising from a seated or prone position. Do not drink alcohol while taking this medication.
