Dexmethylphenidate Information:
What is dexmethylphenidate?
Dexmethylphenidate is a mild stimulant sometimes prescribed to treat the symptoms of ADHD, such as inattention and impulsivity. It is believed to work by affecting neurotransmitters associated with hyperactivity and impulse control. By changing the amount of these chemicals in the brain, dexmethylphenidate may help improve focus, attention, and behavior in children or adults with ADHD.
How do I take dexmethylphenidate?
You or your child should take dexmethylphenidate exactly as your doctor has prescribed. It is usually taken twice a day (once in the morning and again at least four hours later), with or without food. It is better not to take dexmethylphenidate later in the afternoon or evening, as it may make it difficult to fall asleep. Do not suddenly stop taking this medication without first talking to your doctor, as unpleasant withdrawal symptoms may occur.
Before taking dexmethylphenidate, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to this or any other medications
- You are taking any other prescription or non-prescription drugs or supplements
- You have a personal or family history of Tourette’s disorder or muscle tics
- You have glaucoma
- You have severe anxiety
- You have any heart problems or a family history of heart disease
- You have high blood pressure
- You have a personal or family history of mental illness, such as depression or bipolar disorder
- You have a history of substance abuse
- You have blood circulation problems
- You have a seizure disorder
- You have had an abnormal brain wave test (EEG)
- You have an overactive thyroid
- You are breastfeeding, pregnant, or trying to become pregnant
What are the possible side effects of taking dexmethylphenidate?
Dexmethylphenidate may cause an increase in blood pressure, so you will need to monitor your blood pressure regularly while using this medication. Other side effects may include upset stomach, nausea, headache, loss of appetite, difficulty sleeping, and dizziness. If you have any side effects that last a long time or become bothersome, let your doctor know. Contact your doctor immediately if you have any serious side effects, including vision changes, numbness or discoloration in your fingers or toes, hallucinations, suicidal thoughts, chest pain, difficulty breathing, severe dizziness, unusual muscle pain or weakness, an irregular heart rate, uncontrollable movements or words/sounds, or an erection lasting more than four hours (in men). Get emergency medical attention if you have a seizure or experience symptoms of a heart attack or stroke.
What if I forget to take dexmethylphenidate?
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for your next scheduled dose or it is within a few hours of when you normally go to bed. If this is the case, skip the missed dose and take your next dose at the normal time.
How do I store dexmethylphenidate?
Keep dexmethylphenidate in a tightly sealed container at room temperature. Do not store it in the bathroom, since bright light and moisture can negatively affect it. If you no longer need this medication or it has expired, ask your pharmacist how to dispose of it safely.
What happens if I overdose on dexmethylphenidate?
Overdosing on dexmethylphenidate is very dangerous and may cause confusion, excessive sweating, uncontrollable muscle movement, vomiting, hallucinations, seizures, and loss of consciousness. An overdose can be fatal without proper medical attention, so call 911 right away if you believe that you or someone in your household has taken too much dexmethylphenidate.
Warnings
Because dexmethylphenidate can cause dizziness and blurred vision, you should avoid driving and performing other tasks that require clear vision and alertness until you know you can do so safely. If this medication is for your son or daughter, it is important to note that the drug can affect a child’s growth rate. Talk to your doctor to determine if the benefits of dexmethylphenidate outweigh the risks; if your doctor does prescribe this medication for your child, they may need to stop taking the drug periodically.

Focalin is the brand name equivalent of dexmethylphenidate. HelpRx has a reusable coupon for both dexmethylphenidate and Focalin, so regardless of whether your doctor prescribes the generic or brand name form of this medication, you will be able to save up to 75%.
