What is dextroamphetamine ER?
Dextroamphetamine ER is a central nervous system stimulant. Drugs in this class may be prescribed as part of a treatment plan for ADHD. Dextroamphetamine ER is believed to work by restoring the balance of certain brain chemicals that affect attention and impulse control. As a stimulant, this drug is also sometimes prescribed to people with narcolepsy to help them stay awake during the day.
How do I take dextroamphetamine ER?
Your doctor will determine a dosing schedule based on your condition and response to treatment; follow this schedule closely. Take dextroamphetamine ER with or without food at the same time(s) every day. Swallow capsules whole; chewing or breaking them may cause the extended-release medicine to be released too quickly. It is best to avoid taking this drug late in the day, as its stimulant effects may make it difficult to fall asleep.
Before taking dextroamphetamine ER, tell your doctor if:
- You have any food or drug allergies
- You are taking any other prescription or non-prescription drugs or supplements
- You have used an MAO inhibitor in the past 14 days
- You have a history of substance abuse
- You have a personal or family history of mental illness

What are the possible side effects of taking dextroamphetamine ER?
The most common side effects of the dextroamphetamine ER drug include insomnia, decreased libido, loss of appetite, and weight loss. Contact your doctor if any of these mild side effects get worse, or if you experience unusual muscle pain or weakness, vision changes, muscle tics, numbness or discoloration of your fingers or toes, seizures, hallucinations, or an erection that lasts more than four hours. Get emergency medical help if you experience an irregular heart rate, shortness of breath, pain in your jaw or left arm, chest pain, weakness on one side of your body, confusion, slurred speech, or fainting, as these may be signs of a heart attack.
How do I store dextroamphetamine ER?
Keep dextroamphetamine ER in its original childproof container and store it out of reach of children and pets. Keep it in a dry space at room temperature (do not store it in the bathroom). If you have stopped using this medication or it has expired, ask your pharmacist about the best way to dispose of it.
What happens if I overdose on dextroamphetamine ER?
Symptoms of a dextroamphetamine ER overdose may include extreme restlessness, a severe headache, fast breathing, unusual mood changes, and seizures. If you suspect that you or someone in your home has taken too much of this drug, get emergency medical attention.
What if I forget to take a dose of dextroamphetamine ER?
